Seriously those 10k guys aren't even American, they shouldn't even be aloud to compete. Am I the only one who feels this way?
They literally were paid to convert to American citizenship to run for the US, seriously embarrassing.

No
Nothing new. Back in the day the Army employed fast running Indian scouts. We need faster runners today.

When done seperately, the Army's elite athlete program, and the Army's path to citizenship make sense, when done together it seems to be an abuse of what the system was set for.
What exactly are these guys exploiting?
They ran faster than 4th by 30 seconds.
They are willing to get their heads blown off in the name of democracy.
They meet all the criteria for citizenship.
Just like your ancestors.
What is the problem?
As a 26 year veteran who was a member of all army track team years ago all these posts are a joke. None of you have any idea of the funding of this program (mwr programs for the most part don't involve tax dollars, they have a totally separate funding stream that comes from revenue generated from profits from stores and activities on post). Nor do you understand the number years that must be put in before become citizen. Nor do you understand that you are subject to recall from the program at any time and will be back in your unit
They shouldn't even be aloud in the military IN GENERAL they aren't even American, the entire program is being massively abused.
You shouldn't be allowed to post vice aloud

I don't think you get the concept of America.

Please enlighten us? And I dont mean that in condescending way but in an actual factual way. What costs and what benefits do these programs bring? Who can be eligible? What kind of combat responsibilities are likely? I mean everyone pretty much can be drafted right. Plus how long tell guys get a green card? Everyone knows that citizenship is possible after 5 years with a green card.

What would cause someone to be recalled from the program? A war? If they didn't run an olympic A time in a given year?
Funded by what?
So a Major, 1LT, SSG, and a couple of SPC's do not get paid from US tax dollars but from candy sales?
In your 26 years associated with elite army athletes, did you or your associates ever get deployed into combat for Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other high risk conflict area - or are members promised made that they will get a cushy position in a super safe area?
Which Army Olympic medalists have been deployed in active duty after winning a medal?
Wonder if it is time for an FOI inquiry?

I've got to agree with this. I mean, through this "Army" vehicle, we can simply "recruit" a world-class international team. Who wouldn't "join" the U.S. army if the benefits were made lucrative enough? For no cost, these guys get top-level coaching, good meals and lodging, all equipment and travel expenses paid, proper rest, free medical care, etc, etc.
Citizenship. You must have a green card before enlist. Meaning you already have some sort of lawful reason to be in USA for example lawful perm resident. This is a several year process to get a green card. You must have this PRIOR to joining army. Once in army you can apply for expedited processing of your citizenship application. Normally must be a green card holder for 5 years before apply to be citizen. This time period shortened to one year if in military. However by executive order this one year period shortened after 9/11. Bottom line these guys don't arrive at airport from home country enlist and boom become a citizen. First several years in USA to get green card status. Then enlist in army. When in army serve honorably then apply to become citizen.
Recall. These folks are in army. They can be subject to recall at any time. Also when their athletic career is over they may still have time left on enlist contract and they would have to spend rest of that time in unit. Years ago several on all army track team were in desert storm.
Eligibility. Anyone in army who meets time standards can apply. If accepted it's up to your unit to allow you to transfer from unit to wcap. Unit will always allow this.
Funding. Military has two funding streams. Appropriated dollars which is tax payer money from congress given to military for training equipment etc. Non appropriated dollars are not from tax payers. MWR is morale welfare and recreation. For the most part MWR activities are funded by non appropriated funds. These come from things like money earned from profits at lpost stores bowling alley etc. WCAP falls under MWR. There are some MWR activities that do get some appropriated dollars.
Bottom line. These gentlemen are Soldiers. They represent the best of the best in the USA It takes years to go from arrival in USA to green card to citizen. Much of their funding comes from fellow Soldiers who spend money at post store etc Fellow Soldiers do not mind funding MWR activities as all can use them such as pool on post movie theater on post etc
Hey Llrunner,
Thanks for explaining this, as you've really enlightened me. I have a new appreciation for these guys and agree that they indeed deserve to represent us!
Then you should take you fat ass and join the military. You don't even have an understanding of what's going on in the military and you call yourself an american. Right now, from 2009 USA army have been recruiting internationalast through MAVNI, and also 20% of new recruits are international. And to educate you you stupid ass son of a ...... they are more than 1000 Kenyans serving in the army right now and half of those are deployed. I am a Kenya serving and I have my friends serving in Afghanistan right now. And you stupid ass sits and type this nonsense makes me wonder what's wrong with American. You lazy people cry about immigrant and yet you are too lazy to do a anything to enlightened yourself. Go to your small computer and type in MAVNI Program and enlightened yourself about many Kenyans and international serving you so called country and see the benefits this menew and women have brought to the army. And right now the program if open. For Marines, Airforce and Navy. I case you will start crying like a ltitle baby onces you find out the Marines leading the front line are Kenyans.
You call yourself smart now?? This is what's wrong with you guys. You think you now everything. Google the word MAVNi. And get back to me. A lot of international's have died for this country since 2009 and when you find out 4 army guys are running at the trials you complain.

That's just BS.
Hey.
If America did not use the descendants of slaves our Olympic Track Team would be quite mediocre.
Exploiting black talent is an American tradition.
