So lets say Galen doesn't run the marathon. How's this gunna go down?
Do you think he'll declare early enough to defer the spot to Puskedra? Or will he keep his options open and just DNS?
Also- has Puskedra made any noise recently? Do we know if he is fit/ ready to race in the olympics...?
If Galen drops the Olympic Marathon, Is Luke Puskedra ready to run?

Salazar said they'll likely decide the night of the 5k
and Puskedra said recently he'll be ready -
He is a professional road runner. What else would he be doing but preparing for a race later this year, whatever race that may be.
I hadn't considered that Puskedra was the alternate. If Rupp is on the fence in deciding what to run it could be a factor in swaying him toward the 5,000M so as to get another NOP athlete into the Olympics. -
I seriously doubt Rupp dumps the marathon. I don't think Luke will be getting that call anytime soon. We all know the 5,000m is Rupp's worst event. I'd be shocked if he runs the 5,000 in Rio.

Rupp will be running the marathon.
There is zero chance that he won't. -
Rupp isn't doing the 5K in Rio. Bet on it. He's doing the 10K and marathon. If the 10K race doesn't go well, he will drop out about half-way and save his energy for the marathon.

Luke is no longer a NOP athlete. Fyi. -
If Rupp makes the team in the 5k then he will triple at the games.
It is all part of the abuse of the system.
Everyone knows what's going on and Alberto loves that he can't be nailed down.
Catch me if you,can. -
I forgot about that. But I know they remain pretty good friends.

Maybe. But I think his chances for a medal in the marathon are just as bad as it is for the 5,000M. Because he will be training to medal in the 10K. Admittedly I would bet he does do the marathon. But if he does, it will be amount money, not medals.
here's a chakra for you duh wrote:

What the hell are you talking about? What abuse? If Rupp is good enough to qualify in all three events he has earned the right to do whatever he wants. And my opinion comes from someone who would love to see Puskedra be an Olympian.
Like him or not, Rupp is a great talent. -
The dropped runner is Jared Ward, not Galen Rupp. Galen Rupp's priority is Rio olympic marathon, whereas Jared Ward's priority is 2016 USA 20k Championship.

Amazing that you took the time to write something so long and pointless.

9/10. Crazy, funny post -
If he were to easily run under 13 and blow everyone away, he might just do it and drop one. The triple is simply stupid! He's not 'Viren' and it wont work in todays world. The marathon in Rio is going to be 'Crap' for sure with the heat. He'd be better off just doing the two as before - going for the AR at 5k if he were close at the Trials, then later going for The marathon AR in New York in the Fall. Right now he's a 2:04 -2:05 guy potentially. But that wont happen in Rio - it's going to be too damn hot!
This then would give Luke a chance - He's got a 2:07-08 in him on a great day at least! But he'll have the same damn problem. Are they running the marathon at night there? It would be so cool! -
way to into himself
he would never give up either event
he will do both to sell himself -

sub 2:05:38 in NYC is a tad out of reach for Galen. -
People are making it sound like it will be hell on earth weather-wise for the marathon. Although it won't be cold foggy London type weather, ~70 degrees, even possibly with a little humidity, will be FAR from the worst weather a marathon has ever been run in.
(Of course, if there's a winter heat wave, all bets are off. Per http://www.accuweather.com/en/br/rio-de-janeiro/45449/daily-weather-forecast/45449?day=49 , however, average weather on August 21st in Rio is only a high of 76 and low of 64.) -
This is classic Rupp/Saladbar obnoxious crap. He could run a 5k in Europe to see how he feels. But nope! Have to keep as many other athletes are possible waiting for him to make a decision.
It is his right, but it is selfish in the extreme. -
Rupp has no chance to medal in the 5k. It's silly to even consider it.
10k is his best chance, and the marathon is an unknown at this point. He does run well in the heat, so he could conceivably have a shot.
He'll race the 10k/marathon.
