Since doing marathon training, Galen Rupp appears to me to be much more relaxed and interesting. Also I think this has a lot to do with this confidence and front running in the 10k.
The same thing happened to me when I switched to marathon training going into my 30's, which was several decades ago.

I think having kids might have humbled or made him realize how important life is besides running. I don't know. Btw, his kids are SO cute! Saw them running the victory lap yesterday and let's just say... his daughter has potential...😉

I think having kids has made him happier and seen his life has a broader scope and purpose...and people tend to learn to talk about their kids a lot...and some scintilla of that may have taught Galen to feel more comfortable in public speaking.
I still harken back to the long form, long two part interview Flotrack did with im in Europe in '09 I think...where you saw the real Rupp, relaxed and away from pressures and comfortable with guys he'd gotten to know...and he spoke more opennly, freely and cinfidently then.
And then LRC started to ish on him more and he learned to hold his cards closer to the cuff.
Whatever the reasons are, he's always enjoyed running, and racing, genuinely, which few runners do (actually, trully enjoy both), so he's running happy, to steal a riff from Brooks.
It is nice to see this tiny niche and frankly not very well respected huddle of the internet get some perspective and appreciate a once in a generation athlete.

Rupp didn't have the confidence to run away from Shadrack Kipchirchir with even 400m to go. In the same way he never tries to get the jump on Mo but follows along willing to settle for less than first.
I met Rupp in the fall of 2011 when I was living in Portland. Seemed like a genuinely good dude then.
Rupp is socially awkward. Has been for years. Horrible interviewer. That said, he's the best we have. And he's the best US distance runner in history and will be for some time to come. If you don't like it, beat him.
Maybe Nikeman can take another shot.

Why would he try to pull away from him? He had an Olympic spot locked up at that point, if he really wanted to he could have jogged an 80 second lap and still would have made the team. He won that race in middle after he jogged a 5k and then threw down some mid to low 60's laps that broke everyone except kipchirchir.
