The top of my arms ache after 16km on my long runs, happens almost every time. It's around the deltoid/shoulder area. Does anyone know why this might happen? Is it normal and my arms will just get used to it? Been running 14 months.

You only need to worry if it starts hurting around 10 miles.

Well 16km is 10 miles :(
Because there's no point in running that far for a beginner. Run shorter easy runs. Run strides and short intervals on track to learn how to run and improve your form. Only extend your easy runs when you run strong all the way. Same for tempos and intervals. If your form deteriorates you run to hard/long/fast. Learn to relax. Always.
long runs are way overvalued wrote:

I'm on 70mpw so it's not even that long, it's 18.5% of mileage. I do strides and I am confident my form is good. I know when it breaks down but these long runs I could do the 2nd half at threshold if I wanted to, my form is good. Can you think of any other reason my arms might hurt? I'm thinking maybe from using my iphone too much, holding it up whilst I'm laid down my arms get achey.

As long as it doesn't start around 80 furlongs you have nothing to worry about.

So it's normal for arms to hurt after 80 minutes? Screw running marathons then.
Are you a troll? I will be as angry as Hitler if I give a sensible answer and this turns out to be a troll thread.
Sounds like you might be tensed up when running, you probably need to relax your back and shoulders and drop you arms slightly.

Not a troll lol. This has been bothering me since I started doing 13 mile long runs but I've done over 6 now, even a 14 miler but it hasn't gone away. My arms slowly start to ache, I try and shake them off or do windmills but it doesn't help. Once I stop running the pain goes away after 2 minutes. I always aim to relax when running, I do relax my shoulders and drop my arms, I've even tried running like Adebe Bikila with low arms.
Does this not happen to anyone else? It's the only thing that bothers me otherwise no issues at all running.
You really only have to worry if it starts hurting at 3 1/3 leagues.

You think you are relaxed and running with good form but this may not be the case.
Here's a way to check. It's preferable that you do this early in the morning, first thing really.
Get outside and start running super, super slowly. As slow and relaxed as you can, as if you are trying to use as little effort and as low a heart rate as you can while still moving in a running motion.
How's your breathing after 10 min of this? Your heart rate? Are you really relaxed with the breathing and heart even though it's easy on your legs and a slow pace?

This is important. If you are running on all fours, you may be working muscles that aren't accustomed to getting intense work.
I was going to say you sound like you're just tense. How are your hands when you run? Do you have clenched fists or do you hold your hands slightly loose? Also, are your shoulder up by your ears at all or are your elbows perpendicular to your torso? All these could lead to sore shoulders after a long run.
