I've run 1:53. I also dropped time in the 400 recently so hopefully I can cut off a little more with some more work.
But anyways, what kind of an 800 can someone achieve with a 49 relay split for 400 speed? I consider myself a pure 800m runner. PRs lean towards more of a 400/800 runner but I can run 70 mile weeks and do 8 mile tempos sub 5:50.
1:51 maybe? It would be helpful to know what your 400 time was before the 49 when you were running 1:53
This is my first year of mid distance. A few years ago I was consistently a 54-55 relay split runner.(I'm 22 now years old btw.) Never ran an open 400. Added sprint training and hard strides to the end of distance runs consistently and was running 51's and 50 points all season and finished with a sub 50.
I ran 1:50.9 with a relay split of 49.2. The 400 was BTTMFW and my best open 400 was 49.94.
Splits in the 800 were 53.7/57.2

You might well be able to go sub 1:50.
I've seen a good deal of stats for guys running 49-high relay splits and 1:50 or so.
You seem to have more endurance than they do.
Posters here will doubt Mo Farah can run 49 open yet he closes 10K in 1:50.
Using splits for pr's is hobby jogger level. The people that say they split something once are most likely lying, someone timed them incorrectly, or a combo of the 2.
And real 400/800 runners can't run 70 mile weeks. That said, 1:53/1:54 can be expected and you would have a nice view of Jarmila Kratchvilova's well developed lats for a full 800m.

He said he's a pure 800m runner who trained as 400/800
1:47-1:49 is what could be done. But only if you have strong aerobic/ stength training to go with that 49. I ran 1:48 and never broke 50 seconds but also trained like a 5k runner with weeks up to 120 miles. Most people want to hear that you could get those results off low mileage and lots of speed but it's not going to happen.

1) I have never run an open 400 outside of practice.
2) I ran a 4x4 at every meet. Some of these meets I have videos (thanks to my parents) of the 4x4. I've timed them myself using the video (to make sure they are correct) and they are usually extremely close. Also, a couple have been FAT splits, and my coaches splits matched those too so the consistency says something.
3) I said my PRs say im a 400/800 runner. I can sprint pretty well for someone who can run 70 mile weeks, if that's better wording for you.
Anyways, the point of this thread was just to see how fast you've seen or think people can run with PRs of only 49-50 seconds for 400m. I am aerobically developed for a 400/800 runner but not so much for a mile/3k runner. Just trying to work on both ends of the spectrum.
The guys I ran with in college that were around your speed in the 400 and were typically 800m runners at best approached 1:50.0. Everyone is different but I'm leaning towards 1:50 being about your max effort if you develop your endurance side more. You kind of have "sub-elite" type of speed for the 800. Solid 400 speed but not enough of it to realistically run sub 1:50. Good luck shaving some more seconds off your 800, I hope you do!

First off, 400m open implies the use of starting blocks. That said it will cost him a bunch off time but regardless he will probably run under 50 seconds. It would be stupid to doubt that.
Now the part of him closing 10km under 1:50 got me lost. Provide me ONE race please. Jogfests allowed too.
Finally, why bring Farah into the discussion anyway?
Since I already started rambling my mouth off, I'd say that with a 49 high (50 mid with same effort) 1:52 sounds feasible.

(I actually drank a 20 oz mountain dew 30 minutes before the race) so that's probably about as fast as i could have gotten. i could run 23.x in the 200mmy coaches thought i was a 1500m/steeple guy, but i couldn't handle mileage and the pain to be honesti had split 49.9 in a 4x400 in H.S. (only ran 1:56 open) but my breakthrough was a big summer of easy mileage and an injury-free XC and indoor track season. That 6-7 months of consistency made me strong and gave me some much needed aerobic work. I was only doing 50-60 a week, but it added up for me.i was stuck at 1:53 for almost 3 years so i understand where you're at, and ran my PB my last race. You can run between 1:48 and 1:52 depending on your training, strengths and how fast the race goes out. Formulas don't exactly correlate so I'd say knowing your PRs, 1:51 or so.
