Olympic Trials Cost $10 Million to put on?

Just to name a few off the bat -

Scoreboard services

Timing services

Backup timing services

Meet program production

Meet Merchandise

To the University of Oregon for the venue and hosting the event

Marketing Media

System-to-System Data flows (this can add up quickly to a 100k/200k expense at the Diamond League level)

A lot of the times big time events like this negotiate a hotel rate probably using money from that $10 million.

Also, the Oly Games needs to be funded.

It's a week long event.

Shorten it next time to 5 days like the Canadian Trials.

So there's a million dollars. What about the other nine?

Legal fees to sue half milers perhaps.

A lot of things you mention like marketing and merchandise should bring in more than is spent so that wouldn't create a budget shortfall.

Negotiate a hotel rate? You have to pay for hotel rooms obviously but its not like there's some huge negotiations for hotel rooms that's going to cost a ton of money. Like you said this is a week long event not a year long thing.

As far as differences with Olympics you don't have to build anything for the trials. The Olympics they build completely new venues and athlete village most of the time.

Seems like the only way you could reach $10 mil is to totally mismanagement or misuse of funds.

I read an article today that said they will be $75,000 short. But Nike will make money. The merchandise store is always packed. A word to wise, if you want to buy any good OT shwag you need to go on the first day or two. The good stuff sells out fast. I never understood how they could not order enough OT merchandise. And yes, its way overpriced. They could make so much more money if they stocked the store with more OT merchandise.

The local primitives hate the fans taking up street parking. TTUSA bribed the Eugene City Council to bypass standard EIR studies. The local primitives are preparing a lawsuit and will file by this September.

The neighborhood has already had special parking zones for years, both east and south of Hayward. Can't park in many areas w/o a decal. So what's their beef? The only areas where we outsiders can park are legal metered spaces on city streets, so the heck with the locals.

The cost of parking structures are through the roof.

The BET awards show brought in paid strippers from all over the country. Hopefully, IAAF, IOC, USATF and Nike are doing the same.

Unless this has changed, athletes at the trials get travel, room and board expenses paid--typically for four days of the meet.

If you make the "A" standard in the Olympic Trials Marathon, you get your travel expenses paid. You pay your own travel expenses for the "B" standard.

How much would it cost to host the trials if every high schooler got comped for all 10 days of the meet, plus travel, lodging, and food for their parents, coaches, masseur, and sports shrink?

I thought Lanana reimburses USATF big shots and certified officials.

Every trials and USA meet has done the same forever. You think those hangers-on ever buy tickets or pay their own way? Nope. It's even worse at the Worlds or Olympics, with 5,000 to 10,000 of the most primo seats for the IOC & IAAF "family." Most of those seats are empty most of the time, cuz the fat cats are out boozing it up in some hotel.

It's a huge scam and Lannana needs to be tarred and feathered, driven out to Florence and put on a boat to Viet freaking Nam. And Phil Knight should be in prison for slave ownership.

How about a list of recipients and amounts of money, gifts, hotel rooms, air fare, etc.

Biggest expense is flying the USATF big wigs out first class and staying in the finest 5 star hotels in Eugene. Per diems, expense accounts...money is no object when you aren't paying.
