Wednesday: 50x400's in 69 with 1 min rest(Ill go slower same rest) + 5 mile in the morning

Thursday: 18x800s(Don't know how fast) + 5 miles morning

I ran workouts with Timmons' group in high school, and with Ryun.

They only did the 5x400 one time, built up to it and then tapered back down into track season. There was no 1 minute rest. He did that later in college, mostly due to the 2 person 10 mile relay, but in high school the quarters were run on 3 minute circuits, with a giant swimming clock to the side of the track. Thus if you ran them in 70 seconds, your rest was the remaining 1:50, but all you did was to start every 3 minutes.

440s and 880s were not run 2 days in a row, and I don't recall him ever running 18 of them, but if so, mostly not. There were usually 6 to 8x 880s, tapering down to 2x880 at the end of track season, and just before he broke 4 minutes for the mile. The circuits for 880s were 8 minutes,

Twice a week the group went to College Hill Park and that's usually where the 880s were run, depending on cross country season or track. Timmons had the runners stop by the pool afterwards to do kicking drills in the water.

Just a sidenote Frank Horwill was told the 50 x 400 was Haile Gebreselassies favorite workout, he ran them in 63 with a 30 second rest. http://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/advice_frank08.html

Scale it to your pace and you will be fine.

Take the 50x400 @69. That is like 8k-10k pace with 2 mins of rest, that isn't insanely stressfull. Just long as hell.

18x800. Those were done at about HM->MP pace if memory serves. If someone put in 8-10 mi MP workout nobody would blink. Break it up into 800s and people get intimidated by the number

Obvoiusly it is a lot of working and doing it without building up to it is stupid. But it isn't as insane as some people make out.

Sometimes 40x was the most, not everyone did them all, they were done comparatively slowly and in sets, a similar philosophy to running high mileage in winter and tapering way down for meets in the summer.

For example, Ryun ran 4x440 on 3' before his 4:01.7 and 3:59.0 races. I was there for one of the sessions and he ran them in 57-55-55-53.

Timmons was a very smart coach, probably the best coach in the country.
