I figure a lot of us may find ourselves having to explain the Russia ban and doping scandal to friends and family who don't know the full story, extent of allegations / evidence, anti-doping protocols, and the context of IAAF and wada scandals. I wanted to make a post so people could paste links the informative articles that have followed the story since the beginning. I hope to use these articles as resources to educate friends and family whome may bring it up in convo.

This is exactly it. Surprising how many people buy in to the idea that USA "good" Russia "bad". I suposse if that's all you are getting pumped into your brain every day by the "media" and like minded people, you just believe it no matter the evidence to the contrary.

So the Russian anti-doping lab blatantly cheats when athletics samples are tested, but not weightlifting, wrestling, gymnastics, swimming....

Some people (Russkies and anti-American types, mostly) think this is some evidence of the USA's vendetta against Russia, pulling their Illuminati-strings to smite Russia out of spite.
But it's not true. It's the IAAF/IOC's vendetta. Because when word got out to the public of what Russia was doing, and how the IAAF/IOC didn't give a shit, the IAAF/IOC were absolutely friggin' humiliated.
Too many athletes getting popped is actually bad business, because the powers that be want to convince the public that cheaters are the exception, not the rule. So they were happy to ignore anomalous blood results and such. Can't rock the boat.
It was all gravy...until the leak from the IAAF to the German public broadcaster, ARD. Then there's the whistleblower Yuliya Rusanova, who gave detailed information on how the Russian state supported systematic doping. And the revelations about the Russians tampering with urine samples at Sochi.
This was way worse than the doping scandals of previous decades. At least in those cases, you could put all the blame on scheming national sports agencies. This time the mud splattered on the global sports agencies as well. There was no doubt that the IAAF/IOC weren't going to let that slide.
tl;dr: The nail that sticks out gets hammered down. Russia went way too far, got way too blatant. They broke the gentlemen's agreement to keep doping from embarrassing the central organizations. So they'll take it up the rear for their sin. Other state sponsored dopers, like China, are way more discreet. Which is why you're not seeing any scandals there.
I doubt that this is the type of conversation that will get you laid.

It means that the USA should easily win the medal count. That is become so much harder. The cost of paying off the drug testers is getting too high. It works better to ban all the competitors, even the innocent one--which are most of the Russians--, to maximize the USA's chances at the #1 medal haul.
*That is BECOMING so much harder.
