We all know over the weekend that Rupp ran 13:20 for the 5k. That being said if he is truly focusing on doing his best in Marathon for the Olympics this is pretty dirty and eye opening. I'm not a big Rupp fan but I'm starting to think he has a really good shot at winning the marathon in August. We know the Kenyans are able to drop dirty 5ks at the end of marathons but this past weekend showed that Rupp is in the same ballpark.
With a 2:11 PR--Rupp was beaten up at the end of that race--Rupp will be lucky to finish top 10. 15th to 20th is more likely.
If he finishes without totally imploding, he could easily be in the top 5. There are going to be 7-10 very good east africans there (3 Kenyans, 3 Ethiopians, the Eritrean WC champ, Kiprotich, a couple more) and maybe half of them will implode and DNF (no Ethiopians finished in '12). If he is better than the other 2-3 then he'll have an outside shot at a medal.
Rupp's PR is irrelevant. He jogged the trials in bad conditions beating Meb no problem. You seem to think this was an all out effort or time trial, when really it was a nice easy run that happened to be in at the Olympic Trials.
With that said I really do not understand why people are not expecting much from him. You are saying 15-20? If Rupp equals his "PR" and runs a 2:11, based on past Olympics he will atill be top 6. But conditions in Rio will be much cooler (southern hemisphere) and the competition will be higher. And Rupp has never wimped out of a global championship race.
What is relevant is that 2.11 will not get anyone on the medal stand.
Rupp will be lucky to finish top 10. Top 10 is an excellent achievement. Only 10 people can earn that. Rupp fans seem to believe top 3 is guaranteed. NOPe.

You don't have to be a Rupp fan to know he has the potential to do something big at the Games.

Rupps is rilly good. I think he is my favorite. He runs very good and has a great sense of humor, that will help him at the end of races when it hurts, cos he can just tell him self a joke and laugh. In conclusion, Rupps is for Gold fer sure.

I certainly expect big things. He wouldn't switch to the marathon if AlSal didn't think it would be a good move in an Olympic year. I feel that he will get at least top 5 and hope that he gets a medal.

Really?? That's laughable. Hopefully you're joking. Pretty much everyone would agree if he time trialed London, Berlin, or Chicago he would run around 2:05. His PR came from the trials, his first and only marathon, which he won by a fair amount, in the heat of LA. He pretty much looked like he jogged and did all he needed to in order to win. 15th-20th? Maybe if he's sick or injured... Otherwise it's top 5 for sure.

No one agrees with your ass-umption of a 2:05 time trial. What will you do when Rupp fails to get top five? How about fail top 10? How about DNF? You don't seem to be mentally prepared for a major letdown. And you fail to understand that there are a lot more sub 2:05 marathon time-trialers than 5 in the world. Do you really think Rupp could get away time trailing London, Berlin, or Chicago while the other runners didn't?

Key word is "dirty". If it was a clean 5K he wouldn't have a chance.
I agree with the assumption of a time-trialed 2:05. So, you are wrong about that.
Rupp is a gold medal contender, though with the announced Kenyan team he is a far cry from the favorite.
I also agree with 2:05ish in a time trial for Rupp. I originally thought the guy saying 2:11 was trolling, but now I'm starting to think he is serious. Rupp destroyed Meb. Absolutely crushed. You may have forgotten, but that is the guy who has an Olympic silver medal, an Olympic 4th place finish, a NYC win, and a Boston win. Rupp is way better than that. Top 5 definitely, a probable medal, and a shot at the win.
Meb is 41. Rupp was 29.

LOL ... you believe a coach timed tempo run is reality? A coach would never try to psych out the competition by fudging the truth, would they? My guess is 5:00 pace, which could have been 4:59, which can be called 4:50 (4:59 with last digit forgotten) without stretching it too far. Fans eat it up. Competitors worry they can't keep up.

If i recall in an interview Salazar corrected a reporter asking a question about the workout to clarify it was not 4:50s, but 4:52s.
Salazar is a meticulous mofo. Have you watched his flotrack vids? Times EVERYTHING.
