And at the end of the working day, most of them leave for home at around the same time. It can get a tad crowded in the elevators and subways, and on the sidewalks as well.
But honestly, I get your point. There's a fuckload of offices--thousands of people in just one of the big buildings.

New York can't spread out so it has to spread up. 8 million people, small area, small real estate space for a separate office for each company to have its own building, so one floor may hold 1 entire company... a 50 story building may have 50 companies each with one floor.
