On March 8, 1971, I watched Ali fight Fraser in "The Fight of the Century." We drove to Mobile, Alabama to watch it on a giant screen set up in some city coliseum. The crowd was electric. Ali lost, but it was an epic battle. Frazier hit Ali as hard as I'd ever seen and Ali still stayed up. What a fight!
Since Ali is in the late stages of Parkinson's disease, this is probably the end for the man who self-proclaimed, "I am the greatest!"

If there was a Mount Rushmore of biggest sports stars he would be on it with Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, and Jim Thorpe.

I've often wondered if I was born black in that time, how I would've handled the turbulent 50s and 60s. Racism then was violent and ugly. Blacks had to work twice as hard to have half as much because of rampant discrimination. I hope I would've embraced the pacifism of Dr. King because ultimately I think that is the better way. But I understand why so many blacks of that time rejected all things white and embraced unthinkable things such as Malcolm X and Nation of Islam.

I don't think pacifist elements of social movements have much impact on their own without both a (-n "unthinkable") militant component and at least moderately progressive/receptive trends in the general population.
I don't agree with notions of racial supremacy espoused by the Black Panthers/Nation of Islam, specifically, but there is something fundamentally American about organizing to stand and fight for justice-- by force where necessary.

RIP Ali. Never was a fan of the shit talk, but the boxing was a thrill to watch.
He certainly was not a draft dodger. He showed up when his number was called, but refused to step forward when they called his name. You can't imagine the courage that would have taken, standing up for what you believe in is beyond you.
