Si Es Muy raro.
So more runners will start doing this. All my Scandinavian and Baltic fellows in Northern America will go across the Atlantic. Then some American runners going foreign would take it to extremes in attempts at being popular and great. Start claiming citizenship to Fiji, Bali, offshore tax havens.
David Torrence request to compete for Peru granted!

Good indication for American distance running as it's easier to make the Peruvian team. We're used to it in Kenya.

He might as well... he's career's been going downhill

David Torrance is a medium distance runner born in Japan and competing in the US, but has all the desire and interest to represent Peru at the Olympics. David's mother is born in Peru and he has DNI, so that their wishes could come true.
David won the silver medal in the 5 thousand meters in the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto and recently participated in the United States, in the same tournament where Gladys Tejeda and Ines Melchor participated.
In that tournament, Torrence exceeded the minimum mark to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. For now, everything depends on the Olympic Committee, but it would assume that the Peruvian delegation would have a new member.

david_torrence Repeats at 7600ft in Arequipa, Perú. #trackwork #altitudecamp #vivaelperucarajo -
Once you compete internationally in one uniform you should not be allowed to change except in the situation of a refugee that is from a war zone. I guess if David was from Chicago he could claim that but he is not and he has competed for the US.
-
Ridiculous. I would be angry if I was an athlete from Peru who Torrence just took a spot away from.
-
So now David Torrence is doing the same thing as Alexi Pappas and competing for Peru

Pappas IS NOT competing for Peru
-
Torrence has the fastest 1500m time for an American so far this year.
They should get rid of no more than 3 for each country for the Olympics or at least the World Championships.
They should simply take all of the best runners in the world.
You shouldn't have Jared Ward in the Olympics and not Kenenisa Bekele. -

I talked to a former Peruvian Olympian last night. He said Torrence is not taking a spot away from any other runners as there are no runners who have the 5000m standard. -
Did I understand that correctly that he is running the 5000 meters for Peru?
He actually has a decent shot at the US 1500 team, espeically if Centro's stress reaction is a bigger deal than we know and if Blankenship continues to give preference to his hairstyle over his running career. -
Peru doesn't have anyone that would meet the qualification standards in either the 1500 or 5000. He isn't taking anyone's spot. This highlights how stupid the Olympics are: People change nationalities because they want to compete at the highest level. If I were Torrence, seeing people slower than me competing at the Olympics or Worlds year after year, I'd be very annoyed. It should be about the fastest competing, regardless of his/her nationality. I mean, for f's sake, Bekele isn't allowed to compete in the Olympic marathon. How does that make any fricking sense?
-
Mentioned this on here almost two weeks ago, people though that was wrong Rojo confirmed he heard it too, and here we are.
I heard it at Swarthmore meet and though that was wacky info. -

Is he running the 1500 or the 5000 for Peru, or both? -
So say that there are countries that can't meet the standard and they don't get in. How do they improve? You are now preventing athletes who don't have a chance to win, but may inspire the next generation of athletes. By not allowing them in you are preventing the next generation from getting in, etc etc. You are essentially guaranteeing certain countries dominate certain sports.
It's not about helping certain countries. It's about all countries coming together to put forth their best athletes - not the world's best - to compete. Because in the Olympics anything can happen. It's all of a sudden less about time and more about ability to compete.
So yes, it does matter if 'certain countries don't get to compete because they'd be knocked out in the prelims anyway'. -
Centro--if his stress reaction keeps him out of the US trials--could run for Guyana. He would probably get on their team without having to run anything.

Nice Big Wave reference. -
At least he's more Peruvian than Alberto Fujimori.

This is *good* for US runners. One less person contending for a spot. No Peruvian athletes have the 15/5 standards, so nobody is out there.
