I get it, neither challenged Alan Webb's record. But to have two separate high school sub-4:00 miles ON THE SAME DAY, in DIFFERENT RACES, is damn special. I was a freshman in college when Webb ran 3:59 and 3:53, and my mind was blown. Kids, remember today.

Eh. Didn't live up to the hype. Might as well be Prefontaine Turkey Trot.
The coach of one of those kids said basically that he reaction should be "meh."
We are the best country in the world, yet we can only get 1-2 kids a year to run as fast as runners in the 60s did on slower tracks with terrible shoes?
The House of Run podcast mentioned that it the bloom was coming off the sub4 HS mile.

I enjoyed both races very much. Great run for both the HS kids.
Very well done to Grice and Iguider; both ran extremely well. 3:52 in the crappy race was so solid from Grice, shortly after his 1:46, season is looking good for him.
Kiprop is something else.

Of course a 4:05 guy (MM) would be impressed by a sub-4 run. The rest of us sub-4 milers (hot wife, 250k income etc.) on LRC know better than to be amazed.
Why is the fact it was different races notable?

I believe you've taken the piss out of yourself there.
A lot of the luster is lost to me as both have already run sub-4. It's special the first time, after that act like you've been there before (exceptions made for records and championships obv)
It was a shame they were at the same meet but not in the same race. There are about 230 countries that would have put those boys in the same race. The USA does not always do things right.

I think what Letsrun faithful wanted to see was HS runners competing, really competing, against the pros like Webb did in 2001. Hunter was hanging on for his dear life for most of the race and then he got dropped.
Yes, Slag competed well in the B race. But that was the B race.
We all want to live in that time in the 60s when a HS kid from Kansas sparked all our imaginations of what was possible by an American.
It's interesting that Slagowski ran the same time at low-key meet in Portland the the did at Pre. The hype didn't change anything. Both were great efforts but the expectations changed.

Other countries do not waste time with HS Track Gibberish. Kiprop was an Olympic Champion at 19. Our absolute best HS Athletes aren't even Kenya's K Squad. Kenya's Jr. Squad is as good if not better than 99.99% of the pro's in the USA 1500 and up.
The USA is stuck in High School and Collegiate mentality which hasn't really produced many Olympic Champions or WR Holders 1500 thru Marathon.
Who was the last Olympic Champion that also ran NCAA 1500M and up?

HS T&F programs are garbage. Not to say that the HS Boys who went sub 4 today didn't achieve something spectacular, they did, despite our garbage HS Programs.
The reality is they would get eaten alive by many African Jr's.
If the 4:01 kid broke GF's CA record at 1600 would have been more exciting. Racing pros it's "meh."
Webb was a once-in-a-generation high school miler, just as Ryun was. Throw the top HS miler in the Pre professional mile for 100 years and there would be only 4-5 years when that HS kid would not finish last. There isn't anything noteworthy in watching a HS athlete scrambling around in last place against world class runners. It is expected.
As an old runner, I'm always happy when a high schooler goes sub-4. It gives me hope for a future of promise and potential magnificence! Meh to all you nattering nabobs of negativism.
I was shocked to see the poor form of Hunter. He might want to get himself some time with a good physio and help clean up his form. Gosh, where do I even start?
The Duck program may leave him injured and languishing as they push his training to the next level.
This is a talented kid who has very sloppy mechanics at this time.
