BUT it may well have been that the folks in the lifeboats were terrified of the thought of getting too close to the folks in the water for fear of being swamped. Once you get within reach how do you manage to bring aboard a half dozen (which you can fit) while keeping another hundred at bay?

The real tragedy was that the engineer who designed the ship was on board and knew how long it would take to sink and that there weren't enough life boats for everyone. He knew there was a LOT of material on that boat that would float and would have been able to keep people out of the water until rescue boats came. He could have organized a 1,000 men to rip the boat apart with the instructions to get everything that would float and hold up one person into the water. In two hours there would have been thousands of makeshift lifeboats all over the water.

If there is a Hell, when I get there I'm going to find this piece of shiite and ask him what the fack he was thinking.

Wrong. They still would have died of hypothermia- you are assuming that these miscellaneous floating pieces would keep them out of the water and dry.

How was the engineer who designed the boat supposed to know how long it would stay afloat? Did the know the severity of the damage? That the ship would break into two? How long it would take to break into two?How would knowing how long the ship would stay afloat affect people's abilities to gather floatable material from the ship? Would knowing that you have 2 hours and 40 minutes--not 3 hours and 20 minutes or 1 hour and 30 minutes--have an impact on the ability to gather material to make makeshift boats?Are only engineers able to distinguish floatable materials from non-floatable materials?How was the engineer supposed to organize 1000 men? Is this a known ability of a naval architect/ship designer? Were there sufficient tools on board for 1,000 men to "rip the boat apart" to make makeshift boats?

Officer Boxhall was put in charge of lifeboat No. 2, which was lowered from the port side at 1.45 AM with 18 persons aboard out of a possible 40. He rowed away from the ship for fear of being pulled down by suction. Boxhall did not actually see the Titanic founder, as her lights had gone off and his lifeboat was about three-quarters of a mile distant. Boxhall spotted the RMS Carpathia on the horizon at 4.00 AM and guided her to the lifeboats with a green flare. After being collected by the Carpathia, Boxhall and the other survivors arrived at Pier 54 in New York on 18 April.

The Titanic was designed by a single engineer?

He knew how long it would take because he could see how fast it was taking on water and that more than ~4 bulk heads were taking on water. The ship designer would know where the best material for possible life boats would be. He would also have the best idea about how to dismantle it and get it into the water. If someone told me to get as many wooden doors off their hinges as I could because lives depended on it, then I wouldn't need to be handed any tools to get the job done. I would find something quickly to get the job done and doors would be flying off their hinges. Multiply that by 1,000.

Maybe people can get out of the water, and maybe they don't. The point is he didn't even try, at all. That's unforgivable. You can put blame on the captain as well but the engineer should have been the ideas guy and he failed.

I think y'all are forgetting the most tragic fact in the whole freaking saga!!! There was ROOM FOR JACK on the freaking door! There was no need for him to freeze and die.

Thomas Andrews was considered a hero by those present.

On 14 April at 11:40 PM, the Titanic struck an iceberg on the ship's starboard side. Andrews had been in his stateroom, planning changes he wanted to make to the ship, and barely noticed the collision. Captain Edward J. Smith had Andrews summoned to help examine the damage. Andrews and Captain Smith discussed the damage to the ship shortly after midnight, after Andrews had toured the damaged section of the ship and received several reports of the vessel's damage. Andrews determined that the first five of the ship's watertight compartments were rapidly flooding. Andrews knew that if more than four of the ship's compartments flooded, it would inevitably sink. He relayed this information to Captain Smith, stating that it was a 'mathematical certainty', and adding that in his opinion, the vessel had only about an hour before it completely sank. He also informed Smith of the severe shortage of lifeboats on board the ship.

As the evacuation of the Titanic began, Andrews tirelessly searched staterooms telling the passengers to put on lifebelts and go up on deck.[3] Several survivors testify to have met or spotted Andrews several times. Fully aware of the short time the ship had left and of the lack of lifeboat space for all passengers and crew, he continued to urge reluctant people into the lifeboats in the hope of filling them with as many people as possible.

He later threw deck chairs into the water to assist people.

Right. He multiplied his idea of throwing things in the water by one, instead of 1,000. That's a fail. I think the mistake he made is that he didn't want to cause a panic by telling everyone the score. History shows that a panic could have hardly killed more people than the path they chose. The people should have been told so they could have had a chance to help themselves.

I agree. This is horrible. Something must be done about it. There should be reparations made to those who lost their lives.
