Really confused about how many rounds each state has to go through to get to finals, like CIF for example I know is multiple rounds right? In Utah it's simple: You either run a qualfying mark for your classification and automatically qualify, or take top 4 at your region meet and go right to state. No other rounds except for region. What are the processes for other states? Can't really get a clear answer from google :/
In the Bay Area in Northern California.
You must advance by place (or an extremely difficult qualifying time) in each of the following meets to move on:
League Trials
League Finals
Section Semi-Finals
Section Finals
State Trials
State Finals
Some section have a division or sub section meet as well.
In PA it's pretty simple. We have Districts, win those and you advance. Run/throw/jump a certain qualifying distance at that District meet, you advance. Depending upon the size of your District, you don't have to win, but place 2-5 and you also automatically get in. Sorta like the OTs. Do it on the day of Districts or it doesn't matter.
Top 4 from regionals make one of 8 sectionals. Top 3 in sectionals make state.
being from RI it's pretty simply. there is an automatic time, and they will take every athlete that hits that time. or they take top 18 depending on how many people make that time.
Every school in Illinois is assigned to a sectional based on geography and school size (we have three classes in Illinois). Place 1 or 2 at sectional in an event and you advance to state in that event. Place 3 or higher and meet or exceed a qualifying mark and you can also advance. Once at state, there is a prelim day for every event except the 3200. Field events and non-laned races take top 12 to finals (or heat winners plus next top times to reach 12). Laned races take heat winners plus extras to reach 9 to finals (state track meet is held at Eastern Illinois University that a nine lane track). Two heats of the 3200 are run on finals day with the "slow" heat being run before the finals get started (you can medal or even win in theory out of the "slow" heat).
In Missouri, each class is divided into 8 districts. Place in the top 4 at districts and you advance to one of 4 sectionals. Place in the top 4 at sectionals and you advance to the state meet. There are 16 athletes/relays in each event at the state meet.

Top 2 in Regionals move on to State.
Straight finals at the UIL State Meet 8 athletes per event, plus I believe the fastest 5th place performance out of the regionals. One meet, all divisions competing within their own division

Its a bit different as not all have enough schools to have a district meet.
For those with a district meet, top 4 move to regionals
For those with no district they move right to regionals

Straight finals at the TAPPS State meet 8 athletes plus the fastest 5th place performer. One meet with each division competing within their own division.
In Maryland is simple then stupid. We have 4 classes based off of size of school, and those are divided into 4 regions based off of geography. Finish in the top 4 at regions, or hit a standard and you advance to the state meet.
It gets stupid in that there are no scheduling guidelines for the region meets. For example in 1 class 3 of the region meets are a 2 day meet, and 1 is a 1 day meet.

Yeah that's exactly how it is in Utah, except we have 5 classifications
Massachusetts:
An idiotic process that makes very little sense.
First step is you must reach a qualifying time to make it to what Mass calls "States" this is equivalent to districts or sectionals or divisionals wrapped into one.
There are 6 "state" meets
Eastern Mass D1
Emass D2
Emass D3
Emass D4
Central Mass
Western Mass
Eastern mass is split into divisions by size. Central and western mass is not split at all.
Next is the "All State Meet". Top 4 in each event + next 6 fastest times in each event from the 6 states are accepted into the All state meet. That is 30 athletes per event.

Last (4th) qualifiers from my local district meet (first step in the process) in 1600 and 3200 were 5:02 and 10:48. With a field of only 9, it is a challenge to make it to the state meet.

MDcoach that seems unfair. Why don't you just have standards that you can hit throughout the year? You hit the time and you're in the meet. Seems like such a logical route for such a progressive state.
In Colorado, state qualifying is a performance list, top-18 times run at any qualifying meet go to state.

We are not classed. So no (A, AA, AAA etc...) We are all one. And their are Sectionals, Regionals, and semi-state, state. Sectionals and Regionals top 5 teams advance. In semi-state top six team advance to state. There are 24 teams and 40 individuals who did not advance.

In south Carolina you have to be top 4 on your team in each events. those 4 compete in the region meet. the top X runners move on from each region and it depends on how big the region is. In region 3-4A which is my region the top 5 go on in each event. Those 5 go to state qualifiers with all the qualifiers from their division in the state which is about 32-40 runners and top 8 from there go onto state
in XC its top 5 teams from each region go to a state qualifiers race which there are three for each division: Upper state, midstate, and lower state. The top 5 teams from upper state and lower state go on and the top 6 from mid state go on. then top 20 individuals whose teams didn't make it from each race. all those runners go to state championships
Track
The top X athletes at the conference championship qualify for state, where X = 16/# of conferences. In classifications were X is not an integer, it is rounded down and the remaining spots are based on next best marks from all of the conference meets.
Each team may enter 4 athletes in each event at conference.
An athlete may also qualify by running a qualifying time during the season (including conference meet) provided the athlete competes in that event at conference, gives an honest effort, and does not finish within the automatic qualifying spots. Qualifying marks are based off of the average 2nd place mark at state for the last several years.
Prelims are held for the High Hurdles, 100, 200, and 4x1. The remaining events are held as one round.
