I say 800 is the hardest to train for specifically and 10k is the easiest to train for bc it's so aerobic but not too far.
Thoughts?

Easiest: 100m
Hardest: Marathon

If you don't care about sucking, yeah, 10k training is plenty easy. Most 5k runners will tell you 10k training is basically the same intensity but with more reps and more mileage, aka more difficult. Half marathon is usually seen as the weak person's event--don't have to do any race pace work or tempos to finish and it has "marathon" in the title, so non-runners will think just running the whole thing is awesome.
I'd say 400IH and 3000m SC are difficult events for which to train. Running + hurdle technique + strength. Both require significant speed and endurance, being tweener events.
Easiest: 100m
Hardest: sprint hurdles
1. The multi-events
2. Horizontal jumps for sprinters. A sprinter from my team just tried the long jump on a whim and qualified for state in it.
800/1500 are hardest to train for.
8K road racing is easiest to pick up. Don't need a lot of specific training just mileage and threshold/tempo stuff.
3000 SC looks like the hardest to race. Never run one though.
The easiest events are the ones with the least variables that can affect performance. The longer distances have so many factors that go into training for and racing them (aerobic development, tactics, finishing speed, etc). On the other side of the spectrum, the shortest events have a large number of variables as well (technique, explosiveness, environmental conditions, etc.).
So my guess would be that somewhere in the middle would be the easiest to pick up. Probably the 400m. For the most part you just get out hard and hang on. Coming out of the blocks isn't super important technique-wise, and there really isn't a ton of tactics involved.
I'd say the hardest event is the one with the most variables. Probably the marathon. Because aside from conditioning and tactics, the variable of fueling comes into play due to trying to cover such a long distance at a pace that is still fast. There's so many things that can go wrong in a marathon compared to an event like the 400.
hardest to get decent at is distance
easiest is long jump
Hardest: pole vault, javelin and high hurdles (takes a long time to master the technique)
Easiest: 100m, as it comes naturally to most and the technique is mostly fine-tuning
Props to me for starting a great thread
