The Paw has mostly mesh upper- at least the current version. Nice shoe.

Have you taken a look at the Teva Proton II? They have a nice breathable stretch mesh upper.

Teva Proton II, hmmmmm. Does anyone here run in these? Do they fit snuggly? Any heal slippage?

Where are you that it's already getting hot?

For what it's worth, the Gel Paw has no medial post or anything which makes it more like the Moscow LU than any other Asics racers. But, in the old days, when the nylon upper was the best available upper, we'd just cut holes in the upper if we found our feet getting too hot. So if you really want to keep running in the MLU, that would be a way to do it.

It has a comfortable mesh exterior upper, feels good and relatively inexpensive. If you go to some race expos you can grab them for under $50.

I suggest the Adidas Cubato Plus. I got a pair a couple weeks a go, freaking amazing. They are light, but not so minimalistic as you might expect-they have as much cushion than my slightly heavier NB 750's. They also aren't too curved like many flats, and they are flexible. A very amazing shoe. Carbon rubber, even, in the spots vulnerable to wear (in contrast to the Tiger Paw's soft outsole).

Used the Cubs for several years w/ no problems; tried the T3s, however, and never went back.

The new Nike Marathoner is awesome. Very durable with full carbon sole and great mesh upper.

Will the Cub work with soft orthodicts? Are they better than the adidas response competition? What about the new asics gel ds trainer X or the asics flash? I am looking at all of them for a light weight trainer. Could you give your opinion? I am a light weight runner with good form but have always trained in a stability shoe until recently running in the brooks epiphany which I really like but want something for fast paced training. I wear spikes when I train on the track so I have decent strength in my feet.

I'm looking at buying a couple of pairs of shoes. I'd like to get one pair that's minimalist, and then something that's closer to a trainer, but not something big and bulky.

Both have same heel height. Both are a reasonably wide fit. I have 300 miles on my tiger paws and they're still fine. Tiger paw is a bit more "old school" -- simpler, no posts or anything. Both weigh about the same. Tiger Paw is much cheaper. Both have a nice mesh upper. I think the magic has some ventilation holes in the sole as well.

On the balance of it, I'd say get the tiger paw, though both are good shoes.

If you're using spikes for track work, you should be using flats for off-track speed. I'd suggest trying on a bunch of them until you find one that you like.

You don't need an air bag in the Ventulus. But you aren't going to blow a bag in a racing flat without a window. But you are probably an idiot anyway.

Thanks elford... I think I'll try the adidas cubata or comp first or flash and ds X that are both trainers and might be a good transition. I road race in the fast twitch but am a little worried about wearing a true light weight trainer on the road. Running on the track is like running on grass for me it feels very soft but the streets are hard.

OK, but I hope you mean the Adistar comp (not the supernova). The Adistar comp is about 8oz, the supernova is as heavy as a trainer. The cubato is one of the lightest flats on the market. If you're worried about the shoe being too hard, go with the Adistar comp, it's cushier than the cubato.

If you're looking for a light trainer, I'd recommend you take a good look at the mizuno precision. This shoe has very good cushioning in the forefoot (where you need it), but is also light and flexible. Not overly spongy in the heel (which is also good, because you're not crashing down hard on your heel during speed work).

Yeah , well i have in the streaks ,AND once in a pair pegasus.

What the hell kinda difference do you think a few mm of eva is going to make. there are plenty of fairly sharp rocks were i run. And, it has been a problem in almost every pair of nikes of run it.

as for how my intellect factors into the durability of these shoes how dont know...but im sure you could fill me in.
