C)The time he spends in the Gym DOES actually slow him down. For every minute he spends in the Gym his lifetime potential in the Ritz-3K-Match Race is reduced by .0004 seconds. So by next month he will have no chance. NO CHANCE I SAY!!

I don't know for sure if Webb lifts or not but maybe his arms are naturally like that. I have big biceps naturally & I don't lift at all. I wish I didn't have them. People assume that I lift & I don't. Maybe it's that core strengthening stuff he does. I've done that & just doing the simple balance stuff in a 3 point position will cause my arms to bulk up.

everytime webb makes an appearance we have this conversation

webb is bigger than the average distance runner and one would think he could stand to trim down on the bulk A LITTLE

however, he tried that one year (his first year as a pro) and it was possibly his worst year ever

he seems to run better with that little but of extra mass and as unorthodox as it is, it works

I guess it's true that we move up in distance as we get older. It seems like just yesterday we were calling for the "dream 2400m match up."

Webb was a fairly decent youth swimmer -- even had olympic aspirations -- and I suspect his 'ripped physique' is a holdover from his swimming days. A few of my teammates are former swimmers, and all are 'ripped' compared to the rest of us. And oddly enough, the former swimmers are all superior runners. Some still swim now and then as cross training.

You are actually right on. Before I graduated I worked at the GMU Aquatic Center and I would see Alan in there every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday swimming a ton of laps and then he would lift afterwards. Occasionally we would chat about training, and he loves swimming, because it's low impact and "Keeps him in as good of shape as running would". I think he is just one of the few people who can increase his speed even when adding more muscle mass.

Alan was ripped and bulky and ran well.

Alan lost some bulk and was not as ripped and didn't run as well.

Then, Alan is bulked up and ripped and running well again.

Does anybody find that fishy?

Oh please, you dont think someone can have as much muscle mass as Webb without using steroids? Also, the kid ran 353 in high school! Is it that amazing that hes run 3 seconds faster since? Seems like a perfectly natural progression to me.

Andre Boucher....he is very ripped..built a lot like Webb...he has run 1:42 for 800, so I think Webb will be ok.

Tri Guy, I ran against him for 4 years in high school, my school was 10 minutes away from his; he's ALWAYS been that way. Personally, I don't think there is any chance he's on anything. If he was, he'd have to have been on it since sophomore year, cause like I said, he's ALWAYS been that way. Why is it not possible for people to be built different than others naturally? Heck, there was a kid on my high school team, Shane Young who now runs for Georgetown, who was always far more ripped than all of us, he wasn't on anything. It's just the way some people are.

The kid isn't strong, just no fat so his muscles are more visible. Sheeit, I could bench two of him.

boucher is much skinnier than webb

I remember reading in Sub 4:00 that one day during his freshman year at Mich, Webb was pissed off about something (probably running crappy) and did bench press sets of 15 at 145 lbs. Unimpressive for a linebacker, but pretty good for a mid distance runner I'd say. He's always had more of an upper body than whats usually seen on an elite miler (ie. El-Gerrouj)

It's been a while since I read the book, so I might be a little off on recounting the story.

Shane Young is JACKED. Easily the biggest distance runner I've ever seen. I mean he looks ridiculous. And he's fast as hell.

Peter Snell was really big, and he was the best in the world. He generated so much power that he ripped up pieces of the track when he ran. It was a cinder track, yes, but I dig the image.

If Webb started looking like Hans and Franz, there would be a problem, but I think that being a strong runner means he has more power.
