As soon as the event is sufficiently long (400m and up?)for lactate buffering to be a component of performance, then "blood dopin" should enhance performance. I believe that some researchers have speculated that if some of the elite 400m runners would experiment with altitude training, then they would improve due to their improved lactate buffering after time at altitude. If they generally accepted range of improvement from altitude training is 1-3%, then that's between 1/2 and 1-1/2 secs. off of a 400 time. As the technical people say, that's a sh*tload of time off of a 400.
Altitude training for sprinters- interesting idea. I wonder if perhaps a greater aspect of improvement would be the effect on turnover, since sprinting at altitude is faster in the less dense air.
