I'm a sophomore and run a 4:48. Is this good or ok? What would be a good goal?

4:09 is typically what college coaches like to look for
I'm in high school lol
That's great! A "super soph" is about a 4:30-4:35 but 4:48 is still really good. In Arizona that'd be a top 15 time in the state for sophomores. I ran a mile as a "workout" during a dual meet where I ran 300m hard and then jogged the next 100m. I did that 3 times then i dogged out the last lap and got 4:59. If I wouldn't have jogged those 300/1600m of the race I probably would've gotten 4:45-4:50? I mainly run the 400 and 800. My 800 is my main race at 2:00.45. Try to shoot for 4:30 next year. Just put in a lot of miles and you'll get there. Good work! I'm a sophomore as well.

Thanks for answering! I live in Arizona and I couldn't help but notice your name.. Do you go to horizon? I go to cactus shadows!

No Hamilton haha. Are you guys a D2 school?
Yeah
2:00 flat is insane for a sophomore I love the 800 but only run 2:09. You could probably bring it down to 1:57 this year.

Thanks bro haha. My best friend at Hamilton David Nelsen runs a 4:30 mile and he's 5th in the state for sophomores! Our class is stacked with mid distance and distance runners. As long as I break 2:00 I'll be happy with my season. A 1:59.99 looks a lot better to colleges then a 2:00.45.
If by 'good' you mean that you can expect to start seeing some D1 attention, you should be in the 4:20-4:25 range at least. But what do sophomore times really matter? More important is the work you're doing now that will get you results next year and year after that. A lot of 4:20-4:25 sophs don't improve from that and there are a lot of 4:40-4:45 sophs that get to around 4:10 by the time they're a senior and go on to be All American in D1.
Wow, you guys are great! My goal for this year is 4:38... I think I just need some motivation to do it while I'm racing. I know I'm fit enough to do it. I guess I'll find out on Saturday lol.

You're going to Westside Invitational at Deer Valley right?! Our coach tried to get us into that meet but they wouldn't accept us cause we're in the East side of Maricopa County and we're too good/big of a school. Good luck bro!

You're damn good already. You have a long trail ahead of you. Worrying about how you rank at the beginning of your journey is a waste. Almost all of the hikers ahead of you at this stage will never amount to much. Focus on yourself. Enjoy the scenery as it is today, but always keep looking ahead to tomorrow.
Very good for a girl, extremely average for a dude.
This is such a funny coincidence lol. Yeah, I'm going to the westside on Saturday, but I don't think I'll go sub 4:40 because I'm doing to 4x800 right before my mile. I will still try though.

This^
Also, pay close attention to the part about enjoying the scenery. I can tell you from experience that if you waste too much time worrying about future running, you'll miss out on the perhaps the most fun you'll have running. I spent my 10th and 11th grade like a taskmaster, focused only on getting a scholarship from a big time school. It wasn't until my senior year after committing that I was able to enjoy wrestling. Looking back, I failed to appreciate some amazing times while I was in them. You are on the right path. Eat right, train right, study, be a high school kid, enjoy your career as it is happening. The great thing is then you will find a college to run at that actually fits YOU, not the persona you tried so hard to create so they would notice you. In the best environment you will reach your potential.

Wise words from a really smart guy. Malmo, good to see you on the forums.

Of course it's good. The average time for seniors in the US is 5:06. A 4:33 puts you in the top 15% (based on 15,000 races from Athletic.net in 2015). I don't have the stats for sophomores.

I wonder if these kids know they just got some very constructive running advice from a former American Record holder? This old guy thinks that was pretty damn cool!
