I started another thread awhile back asking whether or not my narrow foot base is a problem. (My feet land in an almost perfectly straight line when I run.) There were some mixed responses; some thought that if it's my natural gait and I'm not having any injury issues it might not be a problem, but others pointed out that it's basically wasting power with each step.
I watched some pro sprinters from a head-on view and looked at their foot base, and it's definitely much wider than mine, especially when they're accelerating out of the blocks. It makes sense because they're directing all the power from their strides directly back into the track and not sideways. So I've decided that I want to try and correct my foot plant because it might give me a more efficient stride.
The only thing I can think of that I could do to work on this would be to take a rubber band, put it around both my ankles, and stretch it out for a few reps to work whatever hip muscles are responsible for foot base. When I lift a knee my lower leg rotates inwards, so maybe I could also do something similar that would involve rotating the band outwards with my knees bent? Could either of these exercises work?
I'd appreciate any other ideas, since I'm not too sure where to go from here.
