Help settle a debate on my team. I say that Ben True is the undisputed Dartmouth running GOAT. A buddy disagrees that it is Ben True but will not provide an alternative. His agrument basically boils down to, "No, True is not the Dartmouth GOAT."
So, I of course respond by saying, "Well then, who is?"
His only comeback, "I don't know, but it's definitely not Ben True."
What say ye, Letsrun?

Well what are we talking about here? Their college career? Then heck no. If we are talking their pro careers, then yes I would say he is up there as one of their top all time runners.

I do know that True has the best 5K PR and won several national XC titles.

True also has the best 3km and 10km times ever for a Heps alum.http://hepstrack.com/all-time-heps-records/True also had a limited collegiate track career since he did skiing in the winter, but he did earn All-American honors in XC and Outdoor Track (while also getting All-American for skiing).

If you want to expand the GOAT to include contributions to running, then I've got to throw Ray Puglsey into the conversation. Natioinal class collegiate, open, and masters runner, and builder of a strong running community in Northern Virginia (as owner of Potomac River Running).

Tie between Kempainen and True.
Kempainen and True specialize(d) is very different distances - 5K versus marathon. Maybe someday True will move up the marathon, at which point we can make a direct comparison, but right now it's just apples and oranges.
I do sincerely doubt that Kempainen could ever run sub-13 for 5K, which True most likely will fo in coming seasons.
Of course, Abbey is the natural favorite on the women's side.
Also, True has an international win in a DL 5000 meters race. And sixth place at the world championships 5000 is pretty good. And don't forget his 6th place at World Cross which lead USA to get the Silver over Kenya.
So, I'm going with True because:
Times.
National road running individual and series titles.
Better international results.
