He was 2nd at USAs last week.
I went to his instagram and it looks like he was giving a speech tonight. How could that be better financially than possibly winning $40,000?
What was the speech?

Using the combined powers of Google and about 15 seconds of my life, I found this:
https://www.ted.com/tedx/events/16642
It appears he gave a TEDx speech. Also be apparently "has a talent at solving rubiks cubes."
This event was centered around UGA, which apparently is a university that I've never heard of in Georgia. I think their biggest accomplishment is that Reese Hoff a went there.
Now where do I pick up my ivy league journalism degree?

I don't think he was expecting to make the team and he didn't want to back out of his commitment.
I think it was something about his Hoffa Throws Academy, but I'm not sure. maybe he believe his legacy is that program and not his shot put anymore.
Why don't you ask him?

All professional journalists rely on "sources" for their information and it seems we are his.

No one has ever heard of UGA. Small ag school. Might have a J school too, but other than that?

Correct. I could track down his agent's number, try to email or call, see if I get a response or post it on the Internet and hope to get an instant response. I think of one of my main jobs at LetsRun.com is to save you the visitor lots of time.
Yes, you could google around and find the results to all of the meets or all of outside articles that we link to, but it would take hours. How do I know? Because we do it every day.
So I was just hoping to have you guys return the favor.
