I suppose if one bothered to look up the history of the event, there might have been some point to its inclusion in the field event programme, but I can’t think of any point in throwing cannon balls around, or cannon balls on the end of a wire.
The discus event I think comes from the Ancient Greeks, I assume there was a reason why they threw them, but there was clearly an advantage back then of being proficient with a javelin.
I can see why people try to jump higher and longer in a single leap, that’s quite natural from childhood.
But, despite the enthusiasm for the hop, skip named jump by reviewers, I’m still confused as the point of that particular event - why not a skip, skip, hop, jump or a hop, hop, hop, skip and jump to make it more spectacular and error prone.
I dislike the arrogant way the triple jump (and long jump) competitors demand an enthusiastic response and clapping from the spectators and then go on to no-jump!
I’m even more irritated by the TV producers over here in Europe, switching from a track race, sometimes at a vital moment, to go over to a field event, where we wait for the competitor to finally run up and no-jump and still wastes more time replaying the no-jump!
