LRC people, I'm trying to make a decision between running the Chicago marathon or the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon. Aiming for something under 2:35. Would appreciate any thoughts
Here are my considerations
- both are fast courses. weather in general a bit cooler and more consistent at Mohawk Hudson
- I can get a comped entry to Mohawk Hudson, it's within driving distance and I have a free place to stay near the race. Chicago I have to fly to and stay in a hotel. Although I could tie it in with a trip to visit some family. But I could also do a separate trip to visit them and still save that $700 that I'd on Chicago hotels and race entry.
- train track crossing at mile 18 Mohawk Hudson- this is really a drag. If there's a train, you have to stop (could be a couple minutes) and then they "credit" you the time back. I anticipate that the race this fall could well be my lifetime peak as a marathoner (will be 35 on race day) and I will really be upset if I have to stop for a train. I feel like it would be a PR with a huge asterisk.
- competition. Would have people to run with at Chicago, unlikely at Mohawk. Also not fast enough to likely win prize money at Mohawk.
- I ran Chicago one other time and DNF'd(one of two lifetime DNFs). I really liked the course and the competition. Would be nice to get another shot. As somebody who's probably "lower middle-class", I guess the question is whether it's worth $700-1000 to have that experience.
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions
