Not so fast my friend wrote:
Just like fast half marathoners thinking they have the marathon all figured out. Ben could run 13:15 maybe a little faster, but beyond 5k it would be ugly. He'd be lucky to hang past 8k. You gotta be in the race to win the race, it's not just about who is the fastest miler. He just wouldn't have the necessary strength to grind out that last 3k.
Well, last year (in a perfectly set up race) at Stanford (maybe it was the year before) Centrowitz hopped on the churning out 63/64 for 5k and he held on for a 13:20. If I'm not mistaken, there was no kick or anything like that and he finished in the upper middle pack. Prior to that, his 3k PR was 7:45, which is right where Blankenship's PR is. However, his 1500 PR was 3:30 and his 800 has been down to 1:44, I believe. Blankenship is signigicantly slower in the mile, but (before Centro's latest race) their 3k PR's were about identical (holding 61high/62.00). You'd have to give Blankenship the edge in a 5, and the standard in the 10 is 28:00. After Hassan Mead (and maybe Rupp) who is out there is a "shoe-in" for a berth off a slow pace?
