If we are talking hypothetical than, Could King Chez win if he was in it? Yes. Could Grant Fisher win if he didn't redshirt? Yes. Just worry about who's in it, not who could be.
No. He can't lead a 3:55 and he can't kick with 1:49 800 guys if it's tactical. Give it a year or two.
NO. he's not an NCAA athlete.simple answer always prevails.

The question was "could" he? And the answer is a resounding "Yes".
First he would have to become an NCAA athlete. That would require a great many activities in a short time - NONE OF WHICH ARE IMPOSSIBLE!
The truth shall set you free.

He doesn't have a great kick, which you need to win a title.

No, he [bold]could win the title. I would give him low odds, but that is still "could."

Because, you know, closing an 8:42 2 mile in 54 or a 3:57 indoor mile in 57 is just even splitting it.

Not really...
Oregon teammate to be Blake Haney is the frontrunner (Haney dominated the U.S. Junior race, 1500, last year... which included Drew).
The fact that this question is even being seriously discussed tells you all you need to know about how good Hunter is.
Based on his three indoor races, which were run under far less then 100% ideal circumstances, he'd probably be able to run NCAAs with the pack, but would be a very big long shot for the win.
I don't this Drew Hunter would do very well in the Discus event, but we've never seen him try, so he could be a dark horse!
There is zero chance that Drew Hunter would win the NCAA mile title this year. He's not a miler. They view him more as a Craig Virgin type than Jim Ryun.
Just because you've run a fast mile doesn't' mean you can kick in a mile to win it.
Here is how Drew's coach "Tinmanâ€, described Hunter on TheRunZone.com in February.
"Drew is not a miler. He’s very much like Craig Virgin (who didn’t start running until his sophomore year in high school, just like Jim Ryun). Craig was a star endurance athlete, who ran a full 2 miles in 8:40 in the early 1970s, his third year of running, and he could clobber people in cross-country due to fantastic aerobic capacity and endurance. Craig was a star in college and beyond, winning two world cross country titles, setting the American record for 10,000m. I think Drew is the same as Craig."
People who think Drew could win the mile are the same people who think Galen Rupp would have a prayer in a US 1500 outdoors because hes' run a 3:50 mile. He wouldn't.
