Sorry subject should say Alan's training*
Too bad Alan overt rained with excessive mileage. He had the talent to be world class on 50 miles per week but he got overthinking things. He's the man though!
He probably did over train, and certainly over raced.
What he should have done is have a periodization schedule where he had only
two seasons of competition. Webb competed all year long.
Even a "strong" runner will break down with too much stress!

Was he considering a marathon or 10k or moving up distance?
That's a lot of tempo work, fast finish long runs for a mile runner.
What stage of training was this and post London?
Al Sal had him running 1330 on the roads off of prolly 2/3 of that mileage. Sad.
Check out Steve Ovett's training the winter prior to the 1980 Olympics. Often went 10 miles am and 10 miles pm - but both runs under the hour. significantly faster than Webb. I seem to recall his training partner Matt Paterson saying he had 20 straight week at 100+ miles. And, remember, he won 800 gold that year - not 5K or 10K! Depending on the time of year Webb's training is taken from it doesn't appear too much for an elite athlete with lots of time to rest and recover between sessions.

Date says 10/22/2012
Hmm... Well if my memory serves me correctly, Webb got injured in the summer of 2012 after running a 3:37... Had to run 5k at trials and spent most of summer of after trials healing injury. If this log entry from October of that year is correct he obviously had done long since left Virginia and was in the process if not already hooking up w Schumachers group. I believe Webb ran the 20k on the roads that fall... Or the 12k... One of the two if not both. Maybe explains the unusual amount of training for this particular week.
I think this schedule explains why he lost his pop. A guy like Webb should never be running 140 miles a week. 100 tops in my opinion.
I agree. Webb ran his best doing 60 ish miles a week, plyos, and swimming. Even at the longest of events.
Jerry obviously has done well with his guys so i am going to assume this is one of those super high mileage weeks done once looking for the body to make adaptations but would of been proceeded by his normal mpw which i assume is 100mpw under Jerry. At least i hope. I don't know if i would of done this with an athlete like Webb who seems to be injury prone.
This just highlights that Schumacher's training is geared towards the 5/10/steeple. There's not one guy or girl in his group that would list the 1500 as their primary event unless you count German or Lopez.
Jesus, no wonder he got burnt out...
Lotta mileage for an Olympic Triathlon bid.
huge mileage for a miler who was said to be a pretty low mileage guy with tons of speed, drills and weightwork under a John Cook protege.

A lot of volume, but not outrageous for an elite miler, but for triathlete, it seems kind of crazy.
