Seems as if everyone has a coach. Any mavericks?

If I was elite, I'd be self-coached.
maybe if you were coached you would be elite?
As a general rule, if you're elite (or becoming elite), it's best to have a pair of eyes on your training that are NOT yours. Sometimes it's hard to see the forest through the trees.
So, if you want to become an elite, get a coach. Once you've done it for a while, you can go at it alone.
My advice is free - you get what you pay for.

I think that Ron Clarke was perhaps the most succesful self-coached runner of our time. Ron Hill was self-coached as well. Ron Daws was self-coached but heavily influenced by Lydiard. Maybe there's something about having Ron for a name.
I heard alan iverson, AI himself ran a 410 mile in the offseason. Is this true?
Not having a coach in an individual sport is not novel. Obviously a coach is needed for team endeavors. In running (non team), an advisor is really all that is needed unless you don't like pursuing your goal by yourself.
edwin moses- in a very technical event, i might add.

Actually over 50% of Elite runners do not have a coach. Most Have a coach until they become elite. (By the way Ritz and Alan Webb are th Only U.S. Elite Runners, and Ritz is questionable.)

Meb's Olympic silver just isn't enough, is it?
In my opion the three greatest Americans ever where self Coached,
Greatest LD runner-Shorter-Excelled at eveything from the 3 mile to Marthon.
Greatest Sprinter-Edwin Moses- Did his owe thing trained, in a way that would be looked down upon. Lots of miles, and hard hill runs, and was the greatest long sprinter we have ever had. Not Baring MOJO.
Bob Schol(sp) Greatest MD runner has ever had. Might not have been a huge talent. But showed how much more important good hard training, and dillagince is in running.
