How much mileage did your high school coach assign to his/her athletes? Recent discussion has been how certain coaches have their athletes run “only” X or Y miles per week. Except that when I think of everybody I know that ever did comparatively higher mileage, it was something we took on ourselves rather than having our coach assign it. Even on a weekly basis, it seems like a number of us ran at least 25% higher than the assigned total. This has been true of high schoolers I knew during my hs years, college teammates reviewing their hs training, and elites talking about their hs years.
Mileage hit higher totals because the athlete did Sunday runs, morning runs, extra long cooldown runs, winter break runs, summer training, and so on. I don’t remember my hs coach ever scheduling more than 40 mpw for anybody on our team. Not sure I’ve ever seen a coach who assigned more than about 60 mpw. The coach seldom discourages the extra stuff, but I see that as different than writing into the program.
