Why does Nike spend so much on Galen?

0/10You lost it with "all in one basket" remark as it is hard to ignore all the other runners Nike sponsors. Ritz and Puskedra in the marathon and oh what 10+ in NOP, bowerman track club et al. That said, he has brought much more attention and interest to the trials just by entering. Folks I know are talking more about it, who never really followed the marathon trials much.Finally, according to some on letsrun he interviews horribly so by not going to the press event he is helping nike. Can't have it both ways.

Nike's target demographic can project themselves onto him because he looks like them and comes from a similar background. He is doing things that their target demographic dreams of doing.

So he talks with his feet, which is ok for me, esp. since he's not the greatest interview.

Labron made 90 million off Nike before he played one nba game. Galen will never touch 10% of that in his lifetime.

But the real reason is Uncle Phill is from Oregon. Rupp is from Oregon. People feel connected to those who are from the same place.

I think what's worse is that you need or expect a runner to get up in front a camera to talk about what exactly?

Shit, do you want or need to hear Lebron say anything? Or Cam Newton? Or Mayweather? What do people get out of that and why do people expect it?

Who cares that he is a little less "in-your-face" with self-promotion than someone like Nick Symmonds or Kara Goucher. For better or worse, right now, the vast majority of people who actively follow US professional distance running look like and have a very similar background to Galen.

Also maybe its something to do with him being the best long distance runner in the USA by miles? Might have something to do with it.
