In the history of NCAA track, has a team ever had 3 guys go sub-3:59 in same race until last week when Syracuse did?

Steve Pre's fastest mile and an amazingly fast and deep mile for America. It was also run on a real track with no banking and no roof. It was also done 43 yrs ago.

3:54.6 Steve Prefontaine USA 25.01.51 2 Eugene 20.06.1973

I am reasonably sure that Arkansas must have put together an indoor mile with three sub-4s, but that is a question better suited to one of those Razorbacks. I say that it must be an indoor mile because their fast guys usually ran the 1500m most of the time outdoors in the '80s when they were really deep with Mile talent.

My guess is that Oregon did it a few times in the 60s and 70s.

When did Stanford go 1-2-3 at NCAAs? 1999? 1500m though.

I quoted the wrong year, it was 1981.

Check Indiana and also check Ole Miss from the recent decade.

Looks like they were all students at the time. Hard to tell for Martin, he was 22 but I didn't dig too deep. Interestingly, it was the only sub-4 for Chapa and Martin, and the fastest of three sub-4 marks for McChesney.

I think you'd do better by digging up Twilight Meet results front the 60s and 70s.

Why is 3:59 the line? Why not 4:00? It seems so random. Is there something special about 3:59?

it's faster. 4 @ sub-4 has been done many more times.
