People associated with high end modeling agencies often host parties where the models and select men are invited. In many cases the men pay for the privilege of an invitation. The invited men are mostly famous athletes, industrialists, bankers, actors, etc. In New York City there are also many party organizers who are always improving their mailing lists and what ends up happening is a large group of people end up partying at particular restaurants/night clubs over a period of several months. The restaurants have all-night invitation-only parties several nights a week. The restaurants are more than happy to do this as it greatly increases sales of food and drink. Each restaurant doing this ends up with a "scene" attracting a particular group of people. The party organizers get a percentage of the bar and sometimes even the food, just as bands do. The music at these parties is usually provided by DJs, not live bands, but sometimes live bands are brought in (live bands at such events were more common in the 70s and 80s.) Needless to say, a lot of single people in the modeling industry, athletes and celebrities attend these events. I'm sure some other cities are similar, but I only know about the New York scene. The New York scene is especially active during the Winter months when people can't do much outdoors.
