I think there's a wide cross section of runners on here, but the common thread among them is the desire to participate in message board antics. I think there certainly are those just as you described, but I think there are just as many, probably more, recreational runners that never ran competitively in college and maybe not even HS. They came to the sport later, whether it be from another sport or just in their 20s or 30s as a means to satisfy their competitive spirit. The last group would be those former athletes (of any sport) that started running to lose weight following years of eating poorly and drinking, found that it satisfied their competitive spirit and are now running to some competitive bench mark, whether it be age group wins, Boston qualifying or just to beat that guy or girl that is always 20 meters ahead of them at the finish.

Oh, well, if they are trying to qualify for Boston, why not just cut the qualifying course - it's 26.2 miiles!

Or in my case. A talented runner who doped at an early age for non running/competitive reasons and was never on a team and diver competed. Never sacrificed parties and women and rock n roll. I'm now dealing with body issues and breakdown of the physical states from the wear and tear of drug abuse and continual running.

Meth and weed. It's probably the strongest doping agents out there to be honest. I wouldn't be surprised if the top runners on the fringe are popping pills and eating edibles on the daily.

I am bitter but ran D3. I was not a champion in high school. In fact didn't even run. Went to college with the expectation of getting a degree and maybe giving running a try. I tried to run the 800 but was naive and not hateful enough. Was not a star on the team but scored some points. Worked hard but did not see the fruits of that work until several years later.

Did not dope but inhaled a few times. Did not like it and decided it was dumb. Guess I'll never be a politician.

I'm not a bitter runner, but bitter about letsrun.com, and probably about 20% of the the posters on the forum (but they make 95% of the noise). Now I'm a masters runner and relatively speaking do better than as a younger runner. Some here who were better when they were younger scoff at that, but I can take the disdain.

I resent selfie-self posting attention whores on the internet (not here though), that jog slow but think that they know tons about running and only laud other slow attention whores that run long races (or sometime short races) really slow. No respect for anything under a marathon and they even laugh off marathons as "training races" for their ultras.
