It seems like the elites usually have the outgoing runner outstretch their arm and face the incoming runner as they take off. My coach, on the other hand, tells my team to have the outgoing runner take three hard sprinting steps and then turn around to take the baton. Which way is better? I've been in a few situations where I accidentally ran away from the incoming runner and had to slow down to get the baton.
Also, are calls necessary in distance relays like they are in the 4x100 and 4x200? I've never really used them much, but maybe they could help?
