I read the critic reviews which loved the movie, but said the ending was not hollywood and a real downer. I wonder what happens....I will probably wait til video. Which one of the three leads dies in the end?? I am guessing that is what happens...?? I think Eastwood did the depressing "Mystic River" also.
Mystic River was the worst hyped up movie ever. That movie sucked ass.
the main character kills herself in the end.
Hilary Swank kills herself. Yeah.
I didn't see Millon Dollar Baby but I saw 'Closer' and thought that was pretty depressing. Contemplated shooting myself in the face after that one.
On the bright side the final 'Star Wars' film along with a remake of "War of the Worlds" will both be released this coming year. Those two, along with the first of the "Narnia" films and a remake of "king kong" will spice up the theater-going public.
I understand that some enjoy melodrama...I do not...and the subject matter: female boxers, is tawdry.
I prefer BIG SCREEN SPECTACULARS, I get enough melodrama in daily life.
Spoiler (do not read down if you do not wish to know what happens):
2/3 of the way through, Swank's character suffers an injury to her spinal cord and is left a quadrapalegic. The movie then shifts gears to address how each of them respond to this and it becomes a movie dealing with euthanasia. It does not have a happy ending, and yes, her characters manages to kill herself.
"On the bright side the final 'Star Wars' film"
I wouldn't call another overblown, f-ed up fiasco, with awful dialogue, bad acting, and bad directing, excreted onto movie screens by someone whose best days are more than 20 years behind him a "bright side."
Or were you saying it's bright because it'll be the last Star Wars movie Lucas does?
Very perceptive...your LAST paragraph.
What will Lucas do for cashflow after that, or is he all done? Personally the Riddick sequel worked for me as did the Alien series and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
That's uplifting. Is Eastwood going thru a 'noir' period?
Yeeesh!
No way Million Dollar Baby is the most depressing movie of all time.
A certain filmed entitled "Donnie Darko" comes to mind...the just generally depressing subject matter, the darkness of the sets, and that addictive Tears for Fears song ("Mad World") which is a huge downer.
I wanted to cry for humanity after the first time I saw Donnie Darko. Not much touches that.
I was underwhelmed by this overly hyped-up movie.
Clint has a way of trying to manipulate you with his melodrama. I didn't buy into it. I hated Mystic River. I didn't hate this one, but it just left me wanting my money back.
hahaha, Donnie Darko is like Shakespeare in Love compared to some movies. Check out Bad Lieutenant with Harvey Keitel
million dollar baby was brilliant.
i loved this movie! it is kind of happy and sad at the end, i mean, she dies with her glory still ringing thru her head rather than become a vegetable. it was great. and how her coach bought that little place she took him to. and they were so close. aw i loved it!
I thought the movie was great. Not your typical USA happy ever after movie ending.
War of the Worlds on the other hand, was another Tom Cruise piece of garbage with a terrible story line and terrible special effects. In one scene, he and his kids swim across the Hudson River after their ferry capsizes. In mid Novemeber mind you, and then they get out and are dry and not the least bit cold. They then walk to Boston. Orson wells did a much better job using only theatre of the mind.

Gary Jules sings Mad World from Donnie Darko.

I think Spe meant that it's originally a Tears for Fears song. In any case, it was *briliant* in capturing the spirit of the movie.
Gary Jules just sang it...Tears for Fears wrote the song (donnie darko song Mad World)
