I normally do 10 second hill sprints but today it was -5F in the morning when I run. I decided to try doing hill sprints on the treadmill. Standard woodway treadmill, 11 mph max speed and 15% max grade.
It didn't feel light and quick like hill sprints normally do for me, instead it felt like quicksand as the belt would give slightly with my footsteps. The grade is much higher than what I normally use for hill sprints but the speed was lower.
Are these useful for getting the power, strength and speed that come from hill sprints or am I better off going to an indoor track and doing sprints there when the weather keeps me indoors?
The negatives I see of indoor track are greater risk of injury doing flat sprints and that I have to negotiate a turn to do anything longer than 60m. Also that it isn't a hill so I get different benefits then doing hill sprints (I start programming flat sprints in once I start getting into the middle of indoor season).
