I've found officiating to be one of the most interesting and enjoyable activities I've been involved in. Where I live we are actually in extreme need of track officials. Along with another local guy, I cover four school districts. Its pretty good money, too. I highly recommend it to anyone who might be interested.

Around here they pay $65 per duel meet ($10 extra for a tri, $20 for a quad, etc.) and up to $125 for an invitational.
I was a track official in upstate NY for one outdoor season several years back. I took the test and was certified or whatever. The job is great until you (maybe...) make a mistake and some coach's prized JV, 3rd string girl shotputter gets DQed when she steps out. He thought the world was going to end, filed a complaint with the head official (who tore it up when the coach turned away). Whatta load of crap! It's like being a ref for kids soccer. Those soccer moms will rip you a new one if their baby loses the ball.

Sure, you need to have somewhat thick skin, but someone's gotta be in charge and enforce the rules. Be consistent, fair and polite and you'll do fine. It's nothing like refereeing basketball. And make sure you know your rules.
I'm still coaching HS, and in addition to my coaching duties I clerk a few meets. I like that because I don't have to make the tough decisions that the referees sometimes do. You make sure everyone gets in the right lane and right heat and basically keep the meet moving.
