1) People feel nervous before upcoming races and want reassurance from fellow LRCers that they can hit the time that they are secretly hoping for
2) People do not know what type of time they are capable of and want some insight as to what type of pace is realistic for an upcoming race
3) People want to share their training and generate discussion with people who are actually interested
And so on......
It appears you do not understand the meaning of the word "predict".
Why not?

Where can I find one of these mn 2 mile races?
It's a reasonable question. People want to know how to pace themselves for the first part of a race, as there are pretty severe consequences (in terms of placing and finishing time) for going out much too fast or too slow. I can see why people would want an estimate of what kind of shape they're in, especially if their situation means they won't get to race often. Unfortunately, it's a question that's usually difficult or impossible to answer with any precision. I agree that there's no better way to answer the question than going out and running a race.
What would be a better question for these people to ask? How about, "How should I feel at distance X into a race of length Y?"
