I don't see the harm in rigorous background checks to purchase assault rifles or in closing the "gun show" loophole.

No, it doesn't make you a gun nut. It makes you a rational human being who is aware of the constitutsion.....specifically that the second amendment has more words in it than, "the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed",
Sincerely,

It makes you reasonable. I own guns. I hunt. I also completely agree with you.
What do you think of Barry's proposal that physicians should have a means to report patients who they believe to be too mentally ill to safely own a firearm? How about the proposed ban on selling guns to people on the terrorist watch list / no-fly list?
I hear ya man, but the NRA is the only thing between "us" and "them". Them being freedom haters like Obama and his crew.
Join the Gun Owners of America if you're not satisfied with the NRA. although not as large of an organization, they have done a lot for gun owners and people who value personal responsibility.
Out of curiosity, why do you feel there is an 'us vs them' struggle in the United States today? Who do you believe the two sides are, and what do you feel are the innate motives of their belief systems? And what specific actions and beliefs of Obama's make you feel that he is a 'freedom hater'?

That's great. Could you take it one step further and delete all threads started by the aforementioned user? It would do us all a favor.
Thanks.

Which other democracies base their laws off something written hundreds of years ago? Ridiculous!

Newsflash: America is not a democracy.

The end game of the liberal left is registration, then confiscation of all firearms. Been stated by many on multiple occasions. Since they can't just do that through legislative action, they will use any reason to chip away at the rights of law abiding citizens, whether or not these "common sense" actions make any impact at all on violent crime. There is no documented evidence that even a minority of gun crimes are committed by people that obtained their firearms at gun shows or purchased them from a private party or family member. More often than not, they are stolen or obtained on the street. What is ignored is ignored the root cause of the gun violence issue in the US, which is the drug dealing gang bangers in the urban areas of this country. Chicago comes to mind............most stringent gun laws in the nation and correct me if I'm wrong, an epidemic of shootings. I do support laws that keep firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill (how do we now identify them, since HIPAA effectively castrates the medial establishment?) , and criminal gang bangers, who don't go to gun shows.. Background checks at gun shows will likely do neither, just penalize the already penalized, who have to jump through hoops already to obtain a firearm. Now that being said, I do not necessarily have a problem with the actions...........however they will likely not be effective. Enough with the tears. Where were the tears when James Foley was beheaded? Oh sorry had to get to another round of golf.
I wonder if the NRA is hurting the Republican party.
I am liberal and would like gun registration to be mandatory in the way that motor vehicles are because of their danger.
But I don't see that happening in the current political environment, so I don't need my candidate to propose gun registration.
I understand that there is no chance in taking away the rights that Americans currently have to be gun owners.
There are many Democrats that own guns.
So, no candidate could win an election on a platform that took away your guns.
But the NRA's extreme stance and their close ties to Republicans will turn off many voters against Republicans.
It fires up the base but turns off the middle.
Legitimate question here from someone who, somewhat like the OP, is pro-gun but anti-NRA. What benefit would registration provide?

The NRA's "extreme" stance is because the more one chips away at the rights of law abiding Americans, the easier it is to get to the end game as stated in a previous post. They really are the only organization standing between us, the law abiding gun owners, and those that would take them away...............as they did in the UK for the most part and Australia.

Look how it turned out in the UK and Australia - here's a clue for you - THE BAD GUYS ALWAYS GET THEIR GUNS!!! Violence and crime THROUGH THE ROOF. Government OPPRESSION beyond anything you can imagine if you don't actually live there. And here's the kicker - GUN DEATHS ABSOLUTELY OFF THE CHARTS!!!

You must be confusing the UK and/or Australia with some place with inordinately high rates of firearm deaths ... Such as, say, the US.

Stated by many idiots or people with an agenda. Even in Canada, where they have crazy strict gun laws, when they had registration (now cancelled) they didn't confiscate all firearms. They got to keep their guns. And they don't have the 2nd amendment. What you are doing is buying into fear mongering - which preys on the weak minded. I don't expect you to change your mind, because you are weak minded, but you are just a victim of your own stupidity. Don't worry, you can keep your guns - to protect yourself from your fear, you frightened pathetic fool.

Most people don't like activists, even when they agree with them. You could also say "I believe in protecting the environment but Greenpeace annoys me."
