MY school a DI university is leaving for two of our indoor meets two days before the meet and its not cause we are flying on cheap flights were driving. Has any one heard of leaving at such an absurd time. Do any other schools leave for track meets any where near this time. Does anyone think this is at all beneficial.

What's the budgetary alternative? Cutting distance scholarships so that the sprinters and jumpers (who score lots of points) can fly?
You are young and thus, recover quickly. You can nap on the bus or at the hotel. I caution you - if you always need things to be "perfect" in order to perform, you are doomed to always underperform.
The other option is driving during the day
No, of course it's not beneficial. Then again, neither is missing a meet.

the meet is about a 5 to 7 hour drive. it is on a sat and we are scheduled to leave on wed at midnight in vans
why not leave on wed at 8 in the morning or something. Makes alot more sense to me. I ran at a top DIII school and we would have never done anything like that. It sounds idiotic
I am going to guess that you are at FAMU or some other MEAC school where that seems to be routine.
It's probably like some meet trips I took in college. Driving all night (6-10 hours) got you to a Saturday meet early in the morning. Competition went all day and then we stayed at a hotel on Saturday night. Drove back on Sunday.
Our coach admitted it sucked but he could schedule more travel meets since he only had one night of hotel coming out of our meager budget. In the end, it wasn't that bad and I had some great times (running and otherwise) on those trips.
Just a thought: Is there some bizarre NCAA regulation or university rule involved? Something that counts weekdays as missed class time? Hence, having to leave very early on Thursday (12:01 AM) rather than a decent hour on Wednesday.
With two days of lead time, sounds like the coach or AD trying to save hotel money.
Does not sound beneficial to me. Staying up all night and/or trying to get some sleep on the bus doesn't sound like the makings for a productive Thursday.
Why not get a good night's sleep on Wednesday, leave early Thurday morning (say 8 am), and get there by 3 or 4 in the afternoon, which leaves you time to stretch your legs and get a light shakeout run in.
Why not stay at the hotel the night before?? Then drive back after the comp?
Why are you leaving so early? You could leave Friday mornign at 8 am and be there still 15 hours before the meet starts. waste of time and money
No, you're right -- it's ludicrous. In college we routinely drove 5+ hours for meets on a Friday for a Saturday meet. I could see leaving on Thursday morning, but any earlier is odd.
You could always ask that you be left at home.
Coach enjoyed the after meet parties, err, coaching conferences just as much as we did. He'd go to his deal with the other coaches, we would always find a good party or throw one at the hotel.

Agreed, but perhaps leaving at 12:00 a.m. on a Thursday for a Saturday meet 5-7 hours away does call for pause.
that is just my point why leave that early we are leaving at midnight on wed so we will get there at like 6 in the morning wed, when we could leave at like 8 in the morning wed thurs or friday, and be perfectly ready for the meet. Its not even a championship meet its just your average indoor gathering of local schools with local talent. Its just weird and there is no reasoning behind it.
Back when I was a child, local meets were not 7 hours away.
While I do admit this is a whining thread, I would not want to have to perform with that sleep schedule.
