Lance Armstrong appeared on Joe Rogan's podcast last week and had a frank and honest discussion about his drug use and deception. I had not expected such candor from him about it.

The weird thing is that Lance believes Ferrari when he says that he couldn't have produced those power outputs without EPO. But his power outputs are normal for an elite cyclist.
Power outputs in 2011, same as when Lance was riding in the EPO era:

So why does everyone say that power outputs were higher then? They weren't.
Very interesting interview. thanks for posting it.
I didn't post it. But I did see some of it yesterday. I think he was a fantastic athlete. To me the biggest shame, is the obsession everyone had and still has with drugs. So stupid. He was an awesome competitor. I am glad that people are starting to realise that.
Agreed. He was one of the reasons I got into cycling in the first place. I remember watching when he got taken out by that women's bag. He got up caught the lead group, then dropped everyone like it was nothing. It was fantastic theater. Who cares if the guy was a total @sshole? He was an all-time competitor and great entertainment.

Same here. I started cycling in 2003 immediately after he won his 5th tour. I never believed he was clean though. It didn't bother me so much because I didn't think anyone was "clean" and I do in fact buy in to the "level playing field." As long as they were still using their body and not motors, I don't really care.
Thanks for posting. LA with full disclosure.
I listened to all of it a couple days ago. Very fascinating. Lance is as open and real as possible.

There is no-one around like him now. The sport misses that. But why doesn't he accept that he was producing those 450-500 watts because of his fitness? Why does he still believe it was the EPO giving him an extra 10%?
His power outputs are the same as cyclists today, who are (we hope) more thoroughly tested. But they are in the same class of competitiveness as he was. I know they will say it was the Testosterone. I don't believe that either. He was always that aggressive. Anyway. injecting testosterone just supresses natural testosterone production. It's the athlete, not the drugs.

The other possible explanation is that everyone was still using EPO in 2011 ...

I don't think you listened very carefully. While being very careful not to excuse himself, he was clear that it was the hard work, the weight-lost (starving himself), the technology (wind tunnels) plus the drugs. It all worked. He was very clear about this.
I don't think you understood my point. Read my posts. I have explained that the drugs don't do what you think they do. Power outputs are the same now as they were then. It's time for people to wake up and realise how stupid all of this drug nonsense is. And that includes you.

Ummm, why single out Armstrong? The Tour riders were all dirty to some degree. Landis was the most obvious cheat. Lemond is far from the pure athlete he want's everyone to believe. When there is a lot of money at stake, the temptation to find an edge is always there; bike riders, runners, political candidates (mud slinging, making false promises), etc., etc., etc...
Why single out Lance? Because he was better than the rest. And the rest of your post misses my point too. What is this 'edge' that everyone is looking for? It's just kidology. It's all in your head.
OK, you've convinced me. Drugs don't work at all and it is all a conspiracy by the drug companies to sell more drugs.
Thanks J.R.
I'm not J.R.
Mr Obvious, like most letsrun posters, you have no clue about what is going on out there in the world of cycling coaching. No clue, and no interest.
Apparently fooled the cyclists and team managers also. They all were taken in by the conspiracy also. Who woulda thunk it?

Have you ever read a single piece of published research regarding performance enhancing drugs? History is littered with proof that peds work.

Please, don't try that stuff on me. It's tired and old and ignorant. Cyclists are producing the same power outputs now as they were in the EPO era. This drug obsession is stupid and ignorant.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
