At this point I think anyone would be hard pressed to argue that running Ultra marathons doesn't significantly hinder your speed at distances from the marathon on down. Even Max King, one of the best examples of someone who has had success in both marathons and ultra marathons, admitted that he lost foot speed after his first 100 miler. And this was while keeping up his speed work.
I'm really curious to know what is happening to the body that causes this loss in speed. What's most interesting about it is that guys don't just seem to lose speed for a while - they lose it PERMANENTLY. Scott Jurek ran a 19:39 5k this year. Considering Jurek has a legendary aerobic engine, it's baffling to me that his legs won't let him move faster than that pace. If you know of any elite marathoner who has PB'd AFTER running an ultra marathon, please post on this thread.
So what exactly is going on?
Are ultra-marathons simply forcing the legs to over recruit slow-twitch muscle fibers? Or are they permanently damaging/altering the body in a way that damages the tools that allow you to run fast?
Either way, I'm avoiding Ultras altogether - the evidence is pretty clear.
