Hey guys! So I am a Junior this year in my 4th year of XC. My high school doesn't have a real xc team so I train with a club team twice a week which produce very good runners. My pr as a sophomore was 16:45 and then I got injured for winter track and had mono for outdoor track. I worked hard over the summer training 3 days a week with my team doing drills, tempos etc. and running on my own the other 3 days. The only problem is that when I race I mentally shut down and then physically shut down.
When I race, I already know the race is lost before I even go to the starting line. In practice, I can easily run 8:30 clips for 1.5 miles a couple times in a row, but when I line up for a race I can't even break 22 min for a 5k.... It doesn't feel hard but I just can't go any faster. I start out well then my legs just get heavy (literally 2 min into the race) and I already contemplate dropping out. I have worked on my confidence and know I can run well under 17 (ran 17:20 at practice after 16 400's) Any ideas? My coach thinks I just can't handle pain well but I think its just my nerves of winning/loosing and time. Any tips?? Please help because I was supposed to break 16 this year and head to Footlocker Regionals but have been thinking of just quitting before the season ends or possible quit forever. I don't know what to do.
