Exciting race to the line for second in the Toronto Women's Marathon.
My question is how they have Cherop getting second and Sado the bronze. It wasn't a DQ or anything, the timing just somehow has Cherop 0.04 seconds ahead. I have watched this a couple of times and have no idea how that's possible.
It seems to me that Sado's being screwed out of $4000 that she earned.

Ok that's a crazy video. There is no way Cherop (in purple) was 2nd. She was third and should be happy to get third as she could easily have been DQd for throwing her right arm out.

There was a little controversy for the second and third place positions as Cherop and Sado arrived at the finish at exactly the same time. They collided and Cherop was originally given second place in 2:24:16, but after careful and lengthy review, officials decided to award both second place. They will both receive $12,000 rather than a share of the second-place and third-place prize money.
so, both will win the second place amount and the marathon is out an extra $4,000....
Cherop should be DQ'd, but Canadians are too "nice".
They saved 30k as the Canadian women's record was missed by just 8 seconds by Lanni merchant. (She has the record anyways)
It seems clear as day that the woman in the pink shirt beat the woman in the purple shirt to the finish line. What am I missing? Also, why are they wearing tshirts?
does anyone else thing the one in purple should of been DQ'd…what's with all the pushing and crazy antics. She deserved to fall.
That is the oddest finish I have seen. What a horrible set up for a finish line as well.

I agree that she should have been DQ'd. It was way more than just throwing an elbow. She went after the runner in pink from behind.

0 degrees C (32C) at the start.
Cold for these people. That's why they are wearing their sponsor's short sleeve shirts rather than singlets. The pushing was started by the girl that fell. the pink shirt just pushed back, and for the record, there is no way the push back caused the fall. A little drama.

But, the argument could be made that the runner in pink cut off the runner in purple right before the finish line. There could be an argument to DQ her as well. Just playing devils advocate here, I don't think either runner should be DQed.
That's a terrible finish line. You can't put a turn that close to the finish and expect the girls to make clean moves.
Good decision to award both second.
The woman in purple should have finished 3rd at best and DQ for trying to hold her off with her arm. Declaring a tie is ridiculous.
Thanks for playing devils advocate but to me this is pretty clear. As they come around the corner they have to set themselves up to finish within the barriers(which seem a little narrow). The girl in purple seems to be moving to her right as she sprints and puts her arm up as she does it. If you watch how close the girl in pink comes to the barrier right before the finish line you can tell that she was just trying to hold her line and the girl in purple was moving right when she had loads of room on her left to finish and try to outkick the other girl. I think the girl in purple could sense she was going to be out kicked and in her mind at that split second she tried to prevent the other girl from being able to pass. Really the finish line needs to be a longer straight away and wider to help prevent finishes like this from happening. In the end the girl in purple should have been third no tie for second here. She tried some dirty tactics at the end and got what she deserved.
Yep, blame the finish line for Cherop acting like a clawing, shoving, desperate animal at the end of a race she is losing. I'll bet that thousands of other racers managed to finish with that configuration WITHOUT trying to cut off or knock down an opponent.

WTF? There is no rule in professional running that would allow Cherop to earn the silver here. She should be DQed.
Anyone here with real knowledge of why she was awarded silver? That makes no sense. She literally tried to push the other woman into the barrier, from behind no less.
Chip time has nothing to do with anything. You can't start going down that slippery slope in elite racing. If that is the case, you'll have runners starting at the back of the elite corral on purpose.
Aside from the possibility of being DQ'd, is it possible that Cherop crossed the start line a little late and that's why her chip time was faster, giving her second?

That does not matter at all. Race winners are not determined by chip time in ANY race. That is against the rules.
