Just curious what you mean by "dope" since it has quite a few different usages. Pot? Or blood doping? (which I can't imagine a college athlete in any sport, except maybe t&f attempting due to the expense)

Does the NCAA have any type of systemic testing protocol across all sports? Or is there just no incentive to do so?

By "dope" I mean street drugs -- most typically marijuana. As I understand it, the NCAA does test other Division 1 & 2 sports besides football. However, I'm not sure how extensive that testing is -- or if it can truly be described as systematic. Only in the last few years have random summer tests been implemented, so until recently players have had relatively free rein to use ped's in that window. I think the chances of getting caught have been pretty small in football, and even smaller in other sports. But I am by no means an expert on this topic -- just my impressions.

The drug testing is so sparce in the NCAA i dont think it happens often. In the NFL, it happens all the time and there testing is far from WADA quality.

Last year, there were 44 drug suspensions in the NFL.

This year, there have been 38 so far.

Now some of those are for recreational drugs as the NFL doesn't list what they are for.

I don't think this is true. I was tested at least 2-3 times my freshman year alone, and this was 15 years ago. I normally saw ~10 football players being tested when I was tested. Small D1 school. We were usually notified the evening before and had to report ~6am the following morning. I recall thinking it was strange how pale yellow many of the football players urine samples appeared-- probably cause they were downing a ton of water to wash out whatever was in their system.

Not so much the fact that the NCAA testing is sparse, but rather that most programs test internally and therefore can avoid NCAA publicity and sanctions for positive tests. 'Violation of team policy' can mean many things, among them a positive test that has earned a team, not NCAA, consequence.

Basically, the system is a farce.

No interest? Yes, for sure. Some of that due to some sick people on the administration/alumni side who permit doping for "winning."

They have the money.

This is the same org that refuses to adopt WADA standards. They'd be burying 10x the positives they already bury now.

The NCAA should do some PED testing at Wisco and Pre-Nats. This would involve all the top ranked teams on the same weekend in time to have an impact on conference champs, regionals and nationals.

Compared to WADA testing of runners and cyclists on the professional circuits, testing in the NCAA and NFL are a joke. As part of the CBA in the NFL, unless they have tested positive once before, they get tested once a year between April and August, typically at camp or at OTAs. The system is basically set up for them to cheat. For the most part in the NCAAs only the starters get tested and it is very occasional. I know with track we only got tested about once a year and it was pretty targeted to a few individuals. The football players usually had more of a heads up. This may have been the first time Grier was ever tested.

^^ That is a valid question. I think that colleges and universities may regularly implement their own tests for marijuana, as those tests are quite inexpensive. However, testing for a battery of PED's is considerably more costly and thus apparently more rare.

The NCAA for the most part only tests at chamionships. Then ALSO hit each school like once a year. Your school may do its own testing but they dont' even have to suspend you if you test positive.

I think the entire ten years I was Cornell, the track team was tested once the entire time i was there. So only 26 out of say 100 athletes are tested in football. Then they select at least "8 athletes" from the entire university.

Maybe each school is different? As I said, I remember being tested multiple times just in my freshman year. I don't know who was responsible for the testing or what specifically they were testing for. I remember thinking it was strange I kept being selected, but I thought drug testing was more frequent than you guys are letting on.
