‘Champions are everywhere, all you have to do is train them properly.’ Looking at Lydiard’s Wednesday’s quote I was reminded of Geoff Smith. He was a 21 year old Liverpool fireman who had never trained for running in his life. Looking at his fire station’s notice board, he read that the first six home in the Fire Brigade national championships would be selected to run for Britain in the European Fire Brigade championships in Paris. He started training and to cut a long story short - he not only won the British title six months later, he went on to win the European title a couple of months after that. He then went on the run 27.43 for the 10,000mts and come second to Dixon in the New York marathon. I lost touch as to his activities after he moved to the USA, but then I notice he was mentioned in the line up of the Boston marathon winners? Whatever - but as Lydiard commented, just how many Geoff Smiths are out there, never bothering to take up the sport?
