From "Competitor" mag interview:
Q: What bothers you about running today?
A: The industry is huge - it's running the sport now, not the sport running the industry. There are absurd headlines, and I have to say you are just as guilty, publishing articles like "5 weeks to a faster 5k or 10 weeks to a marathon PR." It's bull$hit. It's just selling magazines - or it caters to people who are running 4 hours for a marathon or 25 minutes for a 5k. And that's not running in my mind.

Jonesy. Guy was an absolute monster. Soloed that 2:07 in Chicago like he was the baddest dude on the planet.
-
Absolute beast. And the grand total of posts on him = 6. Sad. Guessing most people who post here have no idea who he is and how he ran on pure guts and courage.

Yeah, one of the greatest marathon performances of all time. He split 1:01 and change halfway and still hung on with no help. No pacers, no epo, no altitude tents back then. Just grit and determination. -
Always blame the eastern bloc, they were the ones doping. The western bloc did it on pure talent and hard work. How about you get one of those 61 half marathoners to run a sub 2:10? you did it, right?
Some people don't have the time or the talent to run three times a day, they just want to do it for fun or for other reasons. -

"And that's not running in my mind." is not part of the article. Did you quote that in earnest? They removed it to not hurt people's feelers? -
Steve Jones was a tremendous runner. I ran NYC back in 1988 when he won it in 2:08. I remember walking back to the hotel in my blanket and two British ladies on the street telling me "One of our lads won it!".
He is spot on with his observations. -

Hey. Wait a minute. 25 minutes is my goal for a 5k for this 60 plus, former 16 minute runner who cannot train for more than 8 to 10 weeks without getting injured. -

Ridiculous talent. First years was one of the top UK young road/XC guys on very low mileage and smoking a pack a day.

I read an article about his love of golf , and that breaking 90 is his standard. Steve Jones is Bull$hit talking about golf. I could beat him playing with 1 hand. Anyone who puts in a couple hours every day working on there game should be a low hdc . People like Steve Jones have allowed laziness, and accepting of being a duffer ,to be "OK" in the gold community. Makes me sick. -

It definitely was there at some point. I have a hard copy and it's there. -
I met Steve Jones in Galway 2005. I was standing in line to order a beer at a pub and the guy in front me turns around and I said, "you're Steve Jones". He was very gracious and we talked for a bit. I told him the first time I saw him running was World XC 1984 in New Jersey on TV. It came down to a group of four (Jones, Tim Hutchins, Pat Porter, and Carlos Lopes). I told Steve I remembered Lopes throwing down a huge move with about 3k to go. Steve said, "I was the only one to try and go with him!". There was no inflated ego in his response, just honest remembrance. I loved watching the racing in that era without as much pace-setting being done. More bare knuckles head to head racing. Jones was as tough a competitor as I have ever seen.

I'm sure he would tip his hat to you and anyone else who goes hard. That's the danger of picking a time and not considering age and circumstance. Racing is racing, but most have no concept of what it means to lay it all out there. Most have never truly raced. -

Save it. I can't believe that. "that" being they'd remove the best quote from the article because it hurt people's feelings. This is the most interesting part of this story now.
