it's been claimed elsewhere that an observer who is claimed coach to a fairly elite, which looks plausible, saw him run a really incredible 700tt, beyond belief in very very very fast time
anyone else have any info on this alleged 700 ?

I don't know, maybe I'll ask him one day. A little while ago he told me about an 8x400m with 200m jog workout he did in all 51's.
kindly delete topic as that observer said he typo'ed 2s out
I ran for SMTC for 4 years. We saw JG do a lot of great workouts. On a few occassions....600s coming through in 48.....
The 700 TT seems really quick, though. Doesn't mean it didn't happen.
I missed that. Where did you see that. That's fast! I don't doubt it. Johnny was a beast!
Finally Ventolin, you're talking about an a actual performace, not a speculative one.
Bring back the Gray Zone!
Every 100 split is pretty tough in an 800. A 1:42 guy who knows he's running 7x100 rather than 8x100 could probably hit 1:25.
I would suspect it would require pacers, good conditions, and peak fitness. But Johnny logged a few 1:42s over a number of years. He had the fitness for such a period of time, I wouldn't doubt that a 1:25 happened at some point.
Ok we know you're dying to do it Ventolin. What is that worth for an 800m?

I trained with SMTC daily (and JG once every week or so when on the track) from 1979 through 1984, and sporadically from 1984 through 1988. Merle never had us do 700 TT's. 600's yes, 700's no so I think it may not have ever occurred. That being said, he may certainly have done one outside of one of Merle's workouts.
OLD SMTC SOB is correct. I've never seen his coach give J Gray a 700 meter time-trial.
The question one should be asking is what is the fastest J Gray has run a 1,200 meter time-trial. If I remember correctly, it was in the low 3:50's.
What is your favourite training session?
DS: I really like the 600m or 700m time trials I might do two or three days before a meet. It gives me a good gauge as to where I’m at.
Just for the record, the 700 TT was done when Joe was caching Johnny later in his career - KD, Jean Destine and Al Royster where also in the group. As you can see from Duane's comments above, Johnny uses these time trials with his athletes today.

How does Duane know when his body is ready? By running through his favorite workout — time trials. “If the coach gives me a 600 time trial, or maybe 700 time trial, coming through a little quicker than race pace, that’s when I know that I’m ready to roll. That’s what I did before The Games; that’s what I did when I ran my PR.â€
Joe certainly might have run him in a 700, Merle (his primary coach) did not or at least not that I saw. I had quit training with the group after leaving CA in the late 80's. We typically did 600's............one I recall JG came through in 1:13 and change, I was WAY back in 1:16 or so, perhaps a tad faster, I can't recall at my advanced age. I know I was 50. something at the 400. JG was in the 48 range. I do not recall him doing a 1200 for time in training, although in a distance medley we did at Northridge relays he ran right around 3:52.
Are you guys serious with the 3:52, or do you really mean 2:52?
Not sure what your calculator gives, but average of his 600 world best and his 800 American record is about 1:27.7 if I did the math right. So 1:26 or better seems unlikely.

Yes, I meant low 2:50's for a three lap time trial.
