Most elite athletes have had an extensive running career starting from when they were 11-12 years old. And even if they didn't start that early, many seem to have run through college. My question is: does it always have to be this way? Is it possible to achieve elite performances in, say, 5K distances upwards if you began serious training in your early twenties?
To use myself as an example, I am female and only started structured training at the beginning of this year aged 23, following 2 years of easy running only. Off no more 25mpw I achieved a mid-19min 5K time and believe I have more to give. The question is... how high should I aim?
I guess this topic will touch on aspects such as: ability to ramp up mileage without injury, development of bone/tendon/ligament strength, gaining racing experience and balancing running with general life. Do you have any examples of late-starting elite distance runners? Interested to hear your thoughts!
